Hi all. Lately there have been multiple cases of people trying to reply to a private message, by sending an e-mail as a reply to the e-mail notification from the forum. Please don't do this. Your replies go to my admin mailbox (the address of which is clearly visible, when you're composing your reply), not to your recipient. If this keeps happening, I'll create some kind of "noreply" system e-mail I guess, but your e-mails still won't go, where you think they will.
Not sure why this is happening this month in particular, I don't think anybody has done this in the past 10 years or so.

Hey everyone.

As you probably already know, the forum really could use a modern, responsive theme that works correctly on mobile devices. I've tried several over the years but everything I found had many problems and requires annoying changes, which I couldn't easily carry over multiple version updates. MyBB version 1.9 is supposed to bring modern responsive themes but its development already takes many more years than originally claimed, so we we're in kind of awkward situation. What we have is usable on mobiles, but not particularly good in my opinion

Recently I learned about Curves UI project (https://community.mybb.com/mods.php?acti...w&pid=1594). The author wants to bring modern looking UI to MyBB 1.8.x. It looks the best of any MyBB "modern" themes I've seen so far, so I decided to try it out on our forum.

At this point it's pretty much the stock theme with barely any changes. It needs many tweaks to functionality (e.g. it doesn't display the thanks button and thanks given area, some buttons are not properly styled etc,) and colors. But it seems nice and I wanted to know what you think, before I do anything else with it

So far I restricted the theme to power users group and above, because it's not ready for a "wide release" so to speak. You can change the theme in User CP -> Your Profile -> Edit options -> Board Style: Fanrestore responsive theme (Curves UI). If you check it out, please report any report issues you find in this thread

Once this new UI is patched up for our uses, I'd like to set is as default for the forum, and the old theme would remain as an option - but I will be removing the current mobile theme (MyBB Go Mobile)

I also added a plugin that displays user avatars in more places than before (last poster avatar etc), along with this new theme

Due to the amount of people who make their accounts on the forum only to spam private messaging inboxes of our project makers, we have decided to add an additional restriction to PM system. Starting 28th June, in addition to posting on the forum, your account needs to be older than 60 days, in order to send private messages. This is subject to change (to 90 days or even more) if we notice that this doesn't stop people from abusing PMs.

"Fanrestore theme auto" is now available. What's new:

- it automatically detects if your device prefers light or dark color mode (you can also just force the color you want in user CP) and presents the theme accordingly
- dark mode has several readability fixes
- light mode has a bit of a color scheme change, darker red is now the dominant color
- editor now displays correctly for light/dark theme

If you want to help us test the new themes please switch now (User CP -> Edit options -> Board style) and report any problems you may see in this thread. "Fanrestore theme auto" will soon become the default one, and I will remove "Fanres new" and "Fanres classic" themes (in all the color options) in the future, since they are almost the same visually but without the fixes, and would be just a pain to continue supporting.

Here's how it looks:

Hi everyone,
you may or may not know who I am. I'm Feallan, and I've been an admin of this forum for about 6.5 years now. When I took up this job, the forum was in a terrible state, with multiple spam bots every day and serious performance and downtime issues, but these problems were so long ago, you may not even remember them. I barely post these days, because I don't have as much free time as I used to, but I lurk many threads and I'm here at least for a couple of minutes pretty much every day. My main activities concerning Fanres have always been just keeping the forum up and running on my hosting service, updating the software, fixing issues that may arise, introducing plugins from time to time, things like that.

As for why I'm introducing myself all of a sudden, well it's just to give a bit of a context to a difficult decision I've had to make. There are two administrators of Fanres, myself who pays for hosting and spoRv who pays for (and therefore owns) the fanres.com domain. Recently we've come to such a conflict, that I do not see a way to cooperate with him in the future. Previously, any changes to the forum, even small ones were always consulted between the two of us and forum moderators, PDB and Doombot, and we always have had to come to some sort of unanimous agreement. Recently, spoRv has done a ton of changes to the forum layout and underlying settings on his own, knowing that the rest of us clearly and strongly objected to them. Not only that, but because of his rash and unplanned approach, the forum suffered a very long, near 24 hours downtime, something I would never allow to happen. After the resulting argument he expressed dissatisfaction with our "agreement" approach and offered me a choice which came down to basically resigning peacefully, or getting booted. Granted, he later cooled off and apologized for it, but the core issue remained unresolved: the conflict is still there, spoRv still wants to have complete control of the forum, and it has only faded out because of my silence on this matter. spoRv believes Fanres is somehow 100% his own creation which he, and he alone should be free to change to his liking, without thinking about the opinion of other users. Myself, I don't like this kind of attitude, to me Fanres is a community that can't exist without its users, and I'm just sort of a janitor who provides the platform for the posts that you guys make. These two approaches cannot coexist and I don't trust spoRv to do right by the forum, or its users.

After discussion with PDB and Doombot, who are both not only moderators, but also prominent users here, we decided to basically pack up and move the forum to a new domain, called Fanrestore.com, one that we own and that has nothing to do with spoRv who we believe is not fit to run a forum. Fanres.com domain has been set to redirect to Fanrestore.com, the site you are now on, but that can change any minute if spoRv decides to restart the Fanres forum on his own. If he does that, know that he is the only staff member who will remain there, the rest of us will be at Fanrestore.com. If you believe we will do a better job than spoRv, please update your bookmark, there is nothing else you have to do (you may just have to re-login), as Fanrestore.com is the exact same forum instance. It has the same database and software, your username, password, post history etc. carries over. I'm very sad it has come to this, I really hate all kinds of forum drama, this one is especially nasty since it may cause a userbase split, but unfortunately at this point it's either us or spoRv and we feel we can't back down and let him ruin the site we've been on for years. I hope all of you guys follow us to the new domain.
WOW, it's great to know that definition of Fan Restoration and others, as well as the Ultimate Aspect Ratio (UAR) concept are written on a printed book!

First of all you have the Fan Restoration, which aims to bring a film as close as possible to originally version released in theaters (this applies to films by which a digital edition is on the market). The implicit reference of this practice is therefore that of restoration, which can include a large variety of operations: "color regrading, frames/scenes replacing, aspect ratio correction, removal of scratches, tears, spots and dust, sounds/dialogs replacing/correction, entire sounddtracks replacing etc."

However, the restoration meant here is operated on a single source (or at most on a source for the image and one for the sound), as it's clear from the comparison with Fan Recreation, where multiple sources are used in order to obtain a philologically correct version. Similar to the Fan Recreation is the Fan reMux, that is the assembly of different sources to get the best possible version of a given movie, without no restoration.

The terminological choice is symptomatic of a certain one scrupulousness: reMux alludes to multiplexing intended as an assembly of materials, while the fact that Recreation involves restoration implies that the latter is intended as a creative act, therefore more open to discussion.

If a certain version of a movie cannot be found in a digital edition, the practice of making a file to be shared is called Fan Preservation. In this case the principle is to preserve a manifestation of a film that otherwise it would risk being lost. If who makes it he tweaks it, you have a Fan Enhanced Preservation, while if you do restore it you have a Fan Restored Preservation. Anyway, Fan Preservations too involve the use of a single source: it is therefore digitized or "migrated" from an analog source.

The Workprints & Bootlegs category is instead related to low quality recordings of alternate or rare versions that they do not arise from official or professional copies, differentiating themselves so from Fan Preservation.

The Fan Extended Edition features adding scenes (or replacing original scenes with them) which, if combined with a restoration, give rise to a Fan Restored Extended Edition. This extension is based on usage of deleted scenes, therefore the fan's will is still limited because we are still referring to an original (think of an alternative ending originally hypothesized).

The other practices move away even more from the concepts of preservation and restoration because the will of the fans is more conspicuous. The Fan Edit provides a new film editing which can include any material, as long as the the result consists of a "coherent version", narratively sensible.
The Filmumentary is defined as follows by the creator Jamie Benning "a format [...] where the viewer can watch a film whilst additional material appears on screen including: deleted scenes, alternate takes, on set audio, text facts and information, audio commentary from cast and crew etc.", with the aim of "make the ultimate making of experience for the viewer." Similarly the Fan Bonus Disc is a collection of materials similar to that of the bonus discs present in the home editions video on the market.

While the terminology is varied, the post author himself has it questioned after four years, noting the need to extend or modify it. Specifically, the user proposes to insert a "comprehensive category" for all those transactions that involve changes to the starting materials, which however neither respond to need for restoration nor does it involve modifications to the assembly. He proposes to call these operations mod film or fan mod (where mod stands for modified). For example, some color gradings are made not in reference to an original model - as in the restoration - but based on the taste of a fan.

Even more curious is the practice of what is called Ultimate Aspect Ratio (UAR), which results from the merge of multiple sources with different aspect ratios - looking to get the largest portion of the image possible: a Blu-ray edition could be matted to 1.78: 1 and show a small amount of extra frame on both sides, while an edition more obsolete could have another matte (1.33: 1) and therefore show conspicuous areas of the extra frame at the top and in the lower one. Therefore, the purpose of the UAR is to merge each frame of an edition with the same frame from another one.

WOW, it's great to know that definition of Fan Restoration and others, as well as the Ultimate Aspect Ratio (UAR) concept are written on a printed book!
Proud to be founder of this forum every day more!
EDIT: this is the English translation (more or less correct) of the book pages involved:

Some of you may have noticed, but there have been problems with e-mail notifications (account activations, PM responses etc.) during the last week or so. This was the final nail in the coffin of the current hosting provider for me, so I'll be looking to change it as soon as possible.

It will most likely happen on this Saturday, or Sunday. During the process, some people will keep seeing old instance of the forum, since DNS changes can take 24 hours to propagate, sometimes even more. To avoid people posting to this old instance (and these posts not being moved to new instance), it will be completely locked with some kind of information message. Hopefully the new service will be better.
