So theatrical 4.1 mixes are effectively L, C, R, LFE and a single mono surround channel (Cb).

If I want to sync and preserve one of these mixes, I'll eventually need to export it as a standard 5.1/6-channel file.

My current approach is to duplicate the mono surround channel and route the copies to channels 5 and 6, so that the exact same signal is sent to both SL and SR.

My question is: should each surround channel be attenuated by 3 dB in that case?

I can't remember whether the original mono surround channel in a 4.1 theatrical mix was already compensated for this, or whether modern AVRs apply their own level compensation when they distribute a single surround channel across left and right surrounds.

How do you usually handle this when converting a theatrical 4.1 mix to standard 5.1?

Hello there, how are doing?

How would you like to elaborate and discuss the history about the Audio Mixes of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Films (1945-1965) for Home Video in order to find out what audio mix is:

A: The optimal audio in terms of AQ (by separating the comparison and sorting them in various best sounding channel presentations fx. "Best 1.0/2.0 Mono, 2.0 Stereo or Multi Channel (4.0 to 7.1 [or Atmos])" on the various Home Video Editions
B: See if the mixes for the selected titles stick to OG audio (either 35mm Optical Mono/Stereo, Magnetic 4-Track or 70mm 6-Track mixes) or remixed audio.

To kick things of, here are my candidates for the following films:
Or simply toggle back and forth between the audio mixes on the R&H titles you own on home video to make your own observations and enlighten the thread to hopefully bring us closer to a reliable conclusion.

If you have any objections or you think the audio mixes of these films have any significance to you, please let me know, as it helps to be informed or educated thanks to the person from the inside who has the info we need.

Please let me know what you think of this.

The only copies of the Dolby Stereo mix of Alien I can find suffer from a variety of issues that I speculate might be inherent to the mix itself but I'm not sure

I have a bit-perfect capture of the [1090-80] CBS FOX Laserdisc which infamously has poorly mastered sound

"The Dolby A noise reduction used on the master tape was not decoded on one channel, leading to the odd sounding release. This was a problem with many LaserDisc titles in the 80's and was due to sloppy work at the mastering plant. Needless to say, the undecoded Dolby A leads to a channel imbalance which varies with level (due to the way Dolby A works) and prevents any proper decoding of the Dolby Surround encoded audio"
Source: https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/49176/1090-80/Alien

I also sampled the PCM Optical track from the 35mm scan and it too was off balanced ontop of having typical optical audio issues such as popping and excess noise.

The only release that has the Dolby Stereo mix that I haven't checked is the 1999 DVD, which I do not have access to. If anyone on this forum has a copy of the disc they'd be willingly to share I'd be more than grateful to sync it to the 4K. Cheers and peace for now

Considering that Balto has a 5.1 Surround Sound track on the 2002 DVD and the 2017 Blu-Ray release and I don't know if this is the original theatrical mix, does anyone have the Cinema DTS CD of that film or a laserdisc copy? I'm interested to see how this compares to the home video releases' audio tracks (especially with Cinema DTS) given the movie's obscurity.

Since Balto was in theaters for a short period of time cause it was a box-office bomb (Toy Story still being the hottest film at the time of its release contributed to the poor performance which led to Universal putting this film into direct-to-video in select territories 1-2 years later; ironically it spawned 2 DTV sequels), DTS discs are very hard to find and it would be a delight if these would get preserved.
