Hi,

For my first project here, and for a Christmas release, I'm going to make an MKV file and custom Blu-ray ISO file of an HD upscaled version of the 1990 animated movie, The Nutcracker Prince, sourced from the 2004 GoodTimes DVD. The original US theatrical trailer will be included as a bonus feature.

The ripped movie will be deinterlaced, pulled down from 29.97fps to 23.976fps, and resized to 640x480 with an AviSynth script and VirtualDubMod, upscaled to 1440x1080 with Real-ESRGAN, and have black bars added in Adobe Premiere Pro.

I would like to upload the finished MKV file and custom Blu-ray ISO file onto MySpleen, but I don't have an account there.

Project Info:

This is the inaugural project of my CRT regrade project. You can read more about it here:

https://fanrestore.com/thread-3228-post-...l#pid62453

The short summary is many older HD transfers have a red/magenta/pink/purple look on modern flat panels. That is because they were graded on older CRTs which have different color characteristics and technology. The goal of this project is to view those older masters on a CRT and then regrade them to look correct on modern flat planes.

I selected Tremors as the first test because it has a pronounce and obvious magenta look, I had the BD and it was on Netflix, so I could compare the colors of the two version. Most of all I love the movie. It's simple B-movie with a lot of charm and a perfect mix of danger and humor. The CRT regrade gets rid of the purple skies and pink whites and brings back the greens, yellow and blues. I don't know if it is more theatrically accurate but it does look a hell of a lot better, IMHO.

Problem with using Tremors is it has a terrible, terrible HD master. Lots of DNR but even worse copious amounts of EE/halos. Clearly it had machine applied variable EE. Some shots look OK, other look like someone took a white crayon and drew an outline around the character. After a lot of hard work with After Effects and regraining, I think I got rid or reduced of 80% of the EE. Far from perfect but the best its going to be until there is a remaster.

I pulled the 5.1 and ENG subs from the BS but also added the PCM 2.0 Dolby Surround from the open matte laserdisc.

Video:
The Tremors BD regraded to how it looks like on a professional color grading CRT. That reduces the amount of magenta and red in the picture and brings out the greens, yellow and blues. Further the master has had the EE reduced and has been regrained.
As such, in order to fix the issues it led to, I had to take some liberties, leading to a stronger blue push throughout rather than the faded burgundies.
Project Info

So you are asking yourself why recreate the TC of Zodiac? Well the project's genesis started a few years ago when I bought a box of Cinema DTS discs. Most of the movies were junk but included in the pack were the discs for Zodiac and Zodiac just happens to be my favorite Fincher movie.

With the discs in hand, I wanted to sync the tracks to the BD so I could hear the far field mix. That was until I remembered the BD is the Director's Cut (DC) and contains several minutes of additional scenes, scene extensions and a few alternative shots.

I debated if I should just patch the Cinema DTS with the BD until I came to the realization that it would be nice to have the TC back in HD form. Re-create what is not available.

So this project recreates the TC by cutting the BD down to the DVD which contains the TC cut. Most of the cuts are covered here:

https://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=4878

But not covered in that link is the fact the DC has more frames for certain shots, one subtitle that I had to matte into the HD footage from the DVD and two brief shots I needed to upscaled, one that had different timing than the DC and one wholly unique shot from the TC. The credits of the DC are also formatted differently when compared to the TC DVD. So I used the DVD credits.

The final master was color corrected to match the DVD's look which is greener when compared to the BD's redder cast.

On the audio side besides the Cinema DTS, I included the DD 5.1 from the DVD
This project attempts to create the best open matte version of The Abyss by combining the parts from 2 separate HDTV broadcasts (no logo cap and AXN for fill). It's a project similar to my Top Gun, Fight Club and Quantum Of Solace projects.
Each video file has the normal range of issues: compression artifacts, smeared grain, missing frames, etc that will be cleaned up. There might be a chance of dirt clean up but I haven't decided yet.
Originally this project was going to use a color regrade that I had come up with for my upscale of the 4:3 OM DVD but when comparing that grade to the colors from the "new" HD master, they were close enough that I decided to just use the "new" HD's colors.

Fight Club German BD OAR (v1.0)

Project Info

This project attempts to create the best version of Fight Club in the open matte format by combining the parts from 3 separate HDTV broadcasts and the Web-DL (thanks X5gb).

Each video file (HDTVs and Web) have their own separate issues including compression artifacts, smeared grain, missing frames, etc. The biggest problem is the compression. Each file has the compression of it's broadcast but when I compare the files against each other I can tell the original master had a host of compression blocking, hatch marks and blurring. Although the master has grain a lot of it is destroyed in the the compression. I first took the parts from each video file that had the least compression and stitched them together to form the least compromised version. Then I cleaned up those compression artifacts and added grain that best matches the BD's level of grain, especially for the shots that were the grain was destroyed.

The color has been left largely unchanged with just a small adjustment to the red and blue in the shadows. The color scheme is the older one of the DVD and DVHS aka pre-BD remaster which mostly similar but with a few notable exceptions.

On the audio side I'm adding the original Cinema DTS soundtrack, the super rare PCM 2.0 and 5.1EX from the Japanese LD and the BD English soundtrack. There might be some other tracks added later.

Finally, I asked spoRv for a copy of his YAO subs. So similar to my Top Gun project you will be able to watch the project in 1.77 open matte or theatrical 2.35 with a tiny bit of crop varying per shot. Also much like TG the opening 20th Century logo be over cropped incorrectly but the rest is fine.

Notes: This project is synced to the US (and likely international) BDs for an alternative soundtracks and subs. Also their is one 3 min sequence in the film that is cropped in every HDTV broadcast and the Web and not open matte. The original master appears that way
Project Info:

This posting is in the proposal section in order to gather more information. Think of it as a place holder for now as I finish other projects.

I had completed a T2 project (never released) which attempted to grade the movie as close to multiple 35mm sources as possible. This project will go in the opposite direction. There has been a fascination with the color scheme of the Japanese squeeze laserdisc for some time. Rumor has that the colors were so odd that Cameron wanted a corrected reissue and got one.

Having always wanted to see it, I was happy that kchrules from the ot made a copy to share. Having seen it, I can it is seemly inaccurate but very interesting. Interesting enough to preserve in a project. So that’s this project; to regrade the current BD to the Japanese squeeze laserdisc. It's also meant to be a test for new techniques.

Couple of issues. First, the LD is very dark overall or at least the capture is. Sometimes it’s as bright, but often not. So I will raise the levels to be more pleasing to the eye. Second kchrules cap has a strange issues including a bad framerate. So in order to frame match it to the BD, I have to cut out or duplicate a lot of frames by hand. It's a bit of a mess and will take a while to fix without another cap. Finally, I will re-grain the BD with appropriate s35 grain

One of my single most favorite slasher movies ever made was a rather early 80s Canadian flick titled My Bloody Valentine.

Unfortunately, it was absolutely butchered by the MPAA at the time and in order to get an R rating, nine minutes of footage had to be chopped out. Good news: Three minutes of footage got added back in a special edition of the movie back in 2009. Bad news: Six minutes of footage is still floating around and the three minutes of footage that did get released are in pretty crappy quality with noticeable scratches, grain, and different color grading. You can check out the footage here.

Being honest, I don't mind the grain and all that too much, same goes for the color grading; Probably due to the fact that it gives the movie a grittier more exploitative / grindhouse-ish feel. However, what I DO have an issue with is that this is inconsistent with the rest of the footage. It's incredibly jarring when you're watching the movie with the footage added back in.

This is where this thread comes into place. Does anyone by any chance have the know-how to fix up the movie? My best guess as to how to approach this maybe is to look back at the laserdisc release of the movie since it would likely contain not only the theatrical mono audio (which is something I don't entirely trust in the special edition release), but it also would have a more accurate and more vintage look to movie.

I'd also like to bring up that although–as far as I know–Paramount (of course) never released that leftover six minutes of footage to this very day, I'm wondering if there's anyone who somehow by sheer luck or something may be aware or has access even to some of this excised footage; Maybe a workprint of the movie even somehow? Highly doubt it but I felt it was worth a mention. I'd also like to ask if an open-matte version of the movie exists, perhaps as a part of one of the older releases? Not quite sure it even exists either, and even if, I wouldn't know how to properly add that in with deleted footage, but I'm still curious. Maybe as a separate rip?

Anyways, I, unfortunately, do not have anything handy since I am not in possession of the laserdisc copy of My Bloody Valentine (let alone a way to rip a laserdisc, to begin with) nor a Blu-Ray rip of my special edition copy since I am ill-equipped to rip Blu-Ray discs sadly enough.

So, is there anyone on this forum who would be interested in the project of fixing up this movie as it deserves?

This is part three in my series of laserdisc to Blu-ray regrades. Taking the color of the laserdisc and applying it to the HD of the BD. ST2 came up not because the new BD is bad, in fact it's excellent outside of being a little too dark, but because the colors of the LD were very different. The LD is very warm with oranges/red and greens but also much brighter making it a sometimes a more pleasing watch. Think of this as a fun alternative to the current BD.
Just like other LD regrades, I am going to reduce the saturation of the LD a bit and tweak the reds to be less blooming.

This project is canceled since I remember this movie is terrible and I didn't want to waste the time.

As anyone worked on Solo yet? I was trying to watch it and I think the picture needs a lot of work.

Putting aside the quality of the movie, the video is absolutely the worst looking movie that I have seen in a long time. I'm fine with the movie looking dark, that was one of the common complaints, but everything else about the picture looks terrible. The blacks are gray and muddy, there is next to no contrast, the colors are terribly muted even when they are meant to stand out (blues or reds) and there is a horrible vignetting across most of the film.

It's almost as they took the RAW files out of the camera and did nothing with them. I expect that of youtube videos but not a multi million dollar film. Even one with as much trouble as this one had.

Even without changing the colors, some small tweaks like adjusting black levels, using curves, upping saturation, shadow work, etc, can make a big difference. You can get a much better picture.
The Great Escape HDTV Version (v1.1)

Project Info:

I dug this up off an old hard drive and like a lot of my projects it just requires the audio sync to be finished...

When the US BD came out, even though it was a new scan, many people did not like the new dark, cool teal and blue color timing. It was very different compared to the older CE DVD:

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/dvdcompare...escape.htm

whereas the older CE dvd was warm with oranges and yellows. A pretty significant difference. Luckily, the older scan had been broadcast several times in HD over the years (like HDNET in the US). I took 3 separate recording and combine them together to create a version with the most frames possible, so GE can now be enjoyed in bright, warmer colors.

I also took both the (now rare) PCM mono and analog commentary from the Criterion LD and synced them to this project, bring back the original sound of the Great Escape.

Note: This is not synced to the US BD. I didn't do a full count but even with 3 copies, the HDTV was some 70-ish frames off the BD.

Video:
3 HDTV broadcasts combined to create the best overall version and then run through light de-haloing and de-blocking with no color correction
