I hope the other two films get this treatment too. It's a pleasure to have been even a small part of such a cool project. Did anyone sample the audio enough to give us an idea of what to expect when this is ready to roll?

I didn't do a full one-to-one comparison but from the parts I tested (volume matched) I'd say they are very similar but with some minor differences. Disclaimer: I did this with my nice headphones and not my 5.1 speakers. The Cinema DTS seems to have more bass in some explosions. Just a little more punch overall to many scenes, Like the Tumbler exploding or the various explosions as the Batpod tries to catch up to the Joker. On the other hand the Dolby sounds more refined in parts, like the truck flip has more echo and create a bigger soundstage. The True's music can sound a bit more clear too. It seems for action the DTS wins but for clarity the true wins.
That make sense?

Excellent! Personally, I would love to see a constant "scope" version, if you're inclined to make one. As ever, thank you for all of your hard work on these projects. Keep up the great work!

In the research I did a few years ago, it did seem to suggest that the 2:35:1/35mm/DCP version was a different entity entirely. With a whole new colour grade closer to the more green/teal of the promotional material. I believe it was also this version originaly preped for the blu, with the Imax version ported to last minute. (There is a hole in this tho as the later trailers match the Imax Blu colour grade. It's one of the reasons why my project came to a holt.)

Yep a 2.35 version is in the work just might be a few weeks till I can get to it but its coming

That makes sense about the 2.35/35/DCP since it would of been a different chain in the color timing. It seems the Imax processed files were on their own island so to speak. I remember and I'll have to dig it out, reading the processing and color timing for TDKR and it was complex. Each delevery type (DCP, Imax film, Imax dig, DCP, etc) had their own workflow to go through. American Cinematographer even had a chart in order for you to understand it and it was the same process as TDK. So, I can see a DCP looking totally different then the BD.

It is extreme but certainly has the feel of the 'blockbuster' colour grade applyed to many movies around the time of release, and certainly match's the advertising material (Which looks extreme next to what we're used to). It's most probably completely wrong but with no real reference to really go by bar the screener (which has way to much Blue in it) and peoples memory. It's all just guess work and personal preference and the end of the day. |
