Black Diamond Classics: Then and Now
#1
In this thread, we'll discuss the various home media editions of the Walt Disney Black Diamond Classics across home media, from 1984 to 1994, and beyond. The objective, naturally, is to figure out what the best version of each would be for my Walt Disney Classics documentary project, so as to ensure the preservation community doesn't get its wand in a knot, as the wizarding world likes to say. ;D

The films this thread will look at are:

  1. Robin Hood
  2. Pinocchio
  3. Dumbo
  4. The Sword in the Stone
  5. Alice in Wonderland
  6. Sleeping Beauty
  7. Lady and the Tramp
  8. Cinderella
  9. Bambi
  10. The Little Mermaid
  11. Peter Pan
  12. The Jungle Book
  13. The Rescuers Down Under
  14. Fantasia
  15. 101 Dalmatians
  16. The Adventures of the Great Mouse Detective
  17. The Rescuers
  18. Beauty and the Beast
  19. Aladdin
  20. The Fox and the Hound
This will be similar to OT.com's thread on the matter, but different in its focus in that the above 20 films will be the subject of this thread.

For convenience sake (And because I'm a bit pedantic), here is the list in chronological order:

1. Pinocchio (1940)
2. Fantasia (1940)
3. Dumbo (1941)
4. Bambi (1942)
5. Cinderella (1950)
6. Alice in Wonderland (1951)
7. Peter Pan (1953)
8. Lady and the Tramp (1955)
9. Sleeping Beauty (1959)
10. 101 Dalmatians (1961)
11. The Sword in the Stone (1963)
12. The Jungle Book (1967)
13. Robin Hood (1973)
14. The Rescuers (1977)
15. The Fox and the Hound (1981)
16. The Great Mouse Detective (1986)
17. The Little Mermaid (1989)
18. The Rescuers Down Under (1990)
19. Beauty and the Beast (1991)
20. Aladdin (1992)

Now, you wish to know the best video and audio available for those films that are available on home video (Meaning 35mm preservations won't be used)?

I'll also be looking for 35mm preservations, needless to say. I'm well aware from the OT thread that not all of them are perfect as far as home media is concerned, and in fact all of them may be completely IMperfect on home video.

I think TLM had a great BD, TSITS has a web-dl that far exceeds it's BD, and the rest will probably be with older, pre-lowry DVD's or LD rips.

I think I already have the 35mm of LATT (with the Italian audio, even!). Pinocchio, I don't.
