Without going into spoilers, I think it's the best Star Wars film since 1980.

Lots of great universe building, surprising additions to the cinematic force mythology, and memorable new characters! Whole thing looks great, and you really get the battle between Rebel Alliance and Imperials come to life in a way never seen before. But, the most bold addition is a degree of radical moral ambiguity on both sides that we really haven't gotten, almost the film I wish that 2015 had given us.

The film admittedly does suffer from some pacing issues early on, but, unlike the other SW films, its nothing that a fanedit couldn't feasibly fix. The film picks up later on and concludes with one of the best endings in the saga, apparently most of which is radically changed reshoots.

Ironically, for a film that takes place during the OT timeline, it will comfort those that didn't like TFA that there aren't as many plot/narrative beats lifted from previous films. There are references to be sure and some more ham-fisted than others , but again, inevitable fanedits will take care of this...

Go see it, hopefully more than once. Have a feeling I'll be revisiting this one time and again.

I saw it over the weekend Falcon. I came away a little less positive but still enjoying it. I love the return to the OT timeline and tech.

I also thought the first half was weak but the second half was great. Not sure if it was a product of editing or the re-shoot but pacing was crap in the first half with Forest Whitaker's character was just terrible. That whole sub-plot should of been removed.

All in all I still like the Force Awakens better since plot aside. I just loved those characters more, whereas I don't think the characters got to shine as much in R1.

But I could get a long list together of negatives, the second half where the pace and plot picks up was great and very tense and really saved the movie. That part was a fun ride.

Again, willing to admit that I'm more excited for the fanedits to follow. The theatrical cut shows promise but is far from perfect.

Even in the unlikely scenario that there are no deleted scenes with which to work, there are small character beats ("I rebel." "Yes, sir!") already released in the promo material that could easily be dropped back in. And, again, the rough editing/crap pacing of the first half can easily be mended in any decent fan's hands; ot.com already has a budding fanedit idea thread (where you can see my own detailed cutlist )

I much prefer RO to TFA, because it's not an almost-remake of a previous episode like the latter, and the story is finally something (a bit more than the others) different. It's a pity the chose of two CGI characters...

I'm a bit sad for the end, though...

Seen this twice now just to make sure and it's a terribly missed opportunity.

I was bored for the first 2/3 of the movie and could care less for the characters. The droid and Donnie Yen are the only two I cared for, everyone else had really no redeeming qualities to make me root for them!

Gareth Edwards was hired for this movie on the strength of the great job he did with characters in Monsters, I feel he was so consumed with making this look like a Star Wars film he lost his way and his characters were lost in a jumble of a story.

I wish I could have seen the original cut to see if there was anything good that was worth keeping from the ending, the current ending was clearly reshot and doesn't fit for me.

The Force Awakens may not be the most original but it's a hell of a lot of fun and a far better movie than Rogue One. If you're wondering what was so familiar about the last third of Rogue One that's because it's Return of the Jedi, you know that other Star Wars movie!!!

I just saw Rogue One. Though the beginning was a bit slow there were other things that I felt pulled me out of the fun of the film and it's story. I still enjoyed it.

The Blu-ray was a missed opportunity.

It makes sense that they didn't include deleted scenes, because that would have opened a floodgate of expectations. We all want to know what the film would have looked like, and that's not something that's ever going to come out.

I would have bought it, though, if it had a commentary track. Even if it steered completely clear of what was cut and why, there are so many fascinating things that I'd like to hear explored. But as it is there wasn't enough to the disc to convince me to purchase it.

Maybe someday if the price ever drops. It's a Disney disc, though, so the odds are kind of remote.

This was probably a Disney call. I would have liked the film to have been a bit darker overall as it is the lead in to Star Wars. I'll give it some time. The Bluray/DVD combo was priced fine for me, and since there are extra's that show some of what didn't make it, it was worth the purchase.
