[Help] How to find out whether a movie was filmed with "Open Matte"?
#21
Films intended for 1.85:1 are almost always shot spherically (there may be exceptions), whether captured with film or digitally. The standard 35mm film frame has an image area of 1.33:1 and the open gate sensor of the widely used Alexa XT digital cameras is 1.55:1. Scope movies are also, for the most part, shot with spherical lenses because anamorphics are expensive and quite heavy. Anamorphics also introduce elliptical lens flares and distortions at the edges, which not many filmmakers like. However, of late, anamorphics have gained popularity in digital acquisition and have been increasingly used in such high profile movies like 'Rogue One,' 'Kong: Skull Island,' 'IT,' 'John Wick: Chapter 2,' etc. However, they are nowhere near used as much as spherical lenses are.
