Are there any alternatives to Gigapixel by Topazlabs?

I have read something about this few days ago... result seems nice, but it takes a looooong time to upscale a single picture, so I wonder how many... months? years? it will take to upscale a whole movie!
Nice free alternatives? NNEDI3, SuperResolution.

I did the math, a month for a film on an average computer. That's a 90 minute film. Topaz may have released a patch for it a month later in November however, bringing the upscale time down to 9 days.

Isn't it available to try before you buy? If so, I would be curious to see some examples (movies related, I mean) - like, ten or ten seconds short clip.

I haven't seen any software so far that comes close to Gigapixel in terms of quality. It's really very good. Photoshop has a "Preserve Details 2.0", which I already found pretty good compared to most resizers, but Gigapixel blows it out of the water without breaking a sweat. On the other hand Photoshop is much, much faster.
There's also waifu2x, which is trained for anime upscaling (and not useful for anything else) and I believe can work relatively quickly with GPU support. I know someone did an AviSynth plugin, but it was pretty much useless as it was CPU-only, and basically even slower than Gigapixel. Maybe someone did one with GPU by now though. I've also tried "Let's Enhance", which has always been kind of a "reference" for me in the past: https://petapixel.com/2017/10/31/website...csi-style/ But it's only a website, has strong limits (5 images) on free usage, and, it also loses against Gigapixel, but not by all that much. Disclaimer: There's probably lots of upscalers I have not tried, so this isn't an all-encompassing statement.

I have to say the AI Gigapixel upscaling looks insane!

I didn't realize there was a commercially available product yet. Thanks for the heads up CaveDoctor.

I do have another question about the product, do you think it could be used to clean up the footage.
If I want to start with 1080p and end at 1080p, do you think there might be any useful enhancements it would provide?

If the 1080p quality is not very good, you could downscale and then upscale using Gigapixel. I've had some positive experiences doing this with some screenshots from low-bitrate 1080p/720p streams, but I haven't tried it in motion. If the original source already has a high bitrate, you are more likely to just introduce artifacts/hallucinated details replacing the real detail. The amount of downscaling also made a difference, depending on how the source looked. As did the amount of denoising applied in Gigapixel. I have not tried upscaling from 1080p higher up and then downscaling again. Maybe best if you just play around and see if you can get anything useful out of it. |
