According to IMDB, Deliverance was 4 track stereo with an alternate mono mix and a 6 track mix made for the 70mm runs. The Warner LD you ripped from is probably based on a release print with the mono track. There was a 1992 Letterbox LD that sported a newer transfer and had a Dolby Surround track, which is most likely the 4 track stereo LRCS mix. The 1997/8 Warner flipper DVD is said to be a port of the LD master, but has a DD 5.1 384kbs track that is probably a discrete version of the 4 track LRCS mix.

The 2007 DVD, HD-DVD, and Blu utilized a restoration and a new 5.1 mix. The 5.1 track on those editions are said to be a brand new remix using master recordings and M&E stems, and sounds completely different than the 5.1 on the original DVD and AC3 on the '92 LD.

I always love hearing this deep analysis of sound mix history. Smile

I've got the 1992 Letterbox LD as well. I'm just waiting on a new laserdisc player with digital out and I will put out a bit-perfect rip of it.

According to IMDB Deliverance was released in 6-track 70mm and mono 35mm formats only. It was released in 1972 way before Dolby Stereo was introduced for 35mm SVA optical soundtracks

The 6-track 70mm might have just been totally mono also.

According to Robert Harris:
"70mm six track magnetic could have been virtually any mix of any number of channels with differing functionalities -- from 5 or 6 channel mono or three channel stereo with an effects track which would have been spread in printing to include channels 2 and 4, to full-blown 5 screen channels (or 2 with baby boom) and split surrounds."

Unless we hear from someone who handled the 70mm prints or saw them either back in the day or in a reparatory theater, it might be hard to determine what the 6-track sound exactly was.

Well did some more poking around and found a first-hand comparisons.

"I remember the stunning 70mm six-track audio during the film's exclusive run at the Cinerama Dome, and the disc's 5.1 audio recreates the same dynamics." - Glenn Erickson, DVD Savant

This ad for the 70mm presentation mentions "stereophonic sound" but I'm not sure how accurate the ad was.
