Yes but in all cases the master used would be uncompressed

It may very well be that it has these dropouts on other releases as well, but the only ones I have on hand are the Blu-ray (most recent) and the original cinema DTS disc (oldest). Alternatively, it could be that the other releases are fine but for some reason there was a problem introduced when transferring for Blu-ray. I could be wrong, but it kinda sounds to me like something's happened here to interrupt the bitstream somehow and error correction has kicked in and tried its best to reconstruct the samples but not entirely successfully; the sound does not *fully* drop out to zero, but there's a very noticeable dip where the majority of it is not contiguous. But I don't really see much point in spending money / time I don't really have on gathering other sources when I've already got the actual cinema DTS, so that'll be what I use.

I'm a bit lost... DVD format includes PCM up to 8 channels, even if not all players could play that, but ALL players could play 6 channels (read: 5.1)...

Oh right, I see what you mean now. I thought you were saying that there was actually a 5.1 PCM release of this film before the Blu-ray. I don't believe I own a single 5.1 PCM DVD, technically possible or not: in my experience, they tended to value putting that bitrate into the picture instead of the sound, which I think was probably a wise move considering the very limited space available on a dual- or even single-layer DVD. Which obviously has a lot to do with why we keep going to LaserDiscs for a lot of this stuff. But yeah in this case I don't think there's a need for the LD/DVD, though I'd certainly be interested to hear it out of curiosity! |
