[Released] Dr. No, FRWL, Goldfinger THX versions
#1
Repost as I posted in the wrong section.

So I finally over three nights was able to complete this project I talked about here over the years.

As you all know, the original 3 first films were released on DVD in 1997 THX approved. They are worthy of note as they include original mono track in english, french and spanish, and the films are in 1.77:1 instead of 1.66:1.

My goal was to upgrade those discs to 4K, as the sound is preferable to the Blu-ray remixes, but the 480p masters are hard to rewatch today.

I decided to take AJP69 versions, and sync them to the Blu-ray discs.

With the syncs in place, I ditched the MGM lion logo at beginning and end of each film, and replaced it with the old UA logo with the swoosh, taken from a Blu-ray source. I also took off the Lowry credits because they weren't on the original films in the sixties.

I dislike the 1.66:1 format on all three films, which shows too much info on top, and feels too loosely framed, so I reframed all the films to 1.77:1. I also did some color corrections to punch up the colors, and align the look with the one for Dr No, which is the most accomplished of all three, color timing wise.

Then I synced the audio from the DVDs, it was easy, as the sync, apart from initial delay, correspond to the Blu-ray discs. (The 4K versions have some differences, I just cut out from them the extra frames to get in sync).

I compressed the films to H265 in 1440p (as some reframing was involved), I didn't want to go down to 1080p as we would lose some of the definition, and didn't want to keep 4K as I zoomed the picture to reframe the films.

Of course, these remains the old Lowry remasters, so they aren't perfect, but it's a nicer way to rewatch those films, while we await for some brand new restoration, someday.

I added, wherever it was possible, Laserdiscs tracks to the projects. As the videos are Blu-ray synced, you can basically add any subtitles or audio you want to those in the future, including LD audio tracks synced to the Blu-ray discs.
