I don't know if there are a lot of Hammer Horror fans here but I wanted to see if anyone is interested in this. If you don't know, this is B-film from back in the 60's directed by Terence Fisher and featuring the great Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. The basic plot involves a Gorgon/Medusa plaguing a small German village.

I found a HD capture of The Gorgon I did 3 years ago. I took the video and IVTC'd it, ran de-blocking (there was very little macro-blocking) and then re-grained it. The video looks good and was very sharp but like a lot of HDTV, totally de-grained. So, I looked at the "close cousins", the UK BDs of The Reptile and The Plague of Zombies (which are also similar in plot) and tried to match the grain as close as possible to those. I figured since they are around the same time, same sets, same crews, same optics, then the film stock is probably the same. I then popped in the mono soundtrack from the DVD. I don't know if there were any other Hammer fans here who would be interested in the final results.

The 1080i HDTV broadcast converted to 1080/24p and re-grained

Audio:
The DD mono from the The Gorgon DVD converted to PCM 2.0.

Output:
MKV compatible within the spec for a 25GB BD

Never heard of it either, but based on what I found while "googling" the title - looks interesting. Like one of those Saturday afternoon, popcorn flicks...

That's a good way to describe it, Jerry. Take one part creepy old-school gothic vibe and add some cheese....

That's right, I forgot you are a big Hammer fan too, Falcon. Not does it only have the two but also Terence Fisher directing. It's not as good as the classics like Horror of Dracula, Curse of Frankenstein, etc but its a fun watch if you like those.

The only thing I can't understand is why you have chosen to convert the DD 1.0 to PCM 2.0...

Good question, spoRv. The HDTV is a 5.1, which is not original so I wanted to replace that. I didn't have the LD so I used the DVD which is AC3 2.0 Mono. So that's dual channel mono. I converted that to PCM since PCM is much easier to edit with. Since the movie is very short and I didn't want to sonically lose anything by converting it back to AC3, I left it as PCM 2.0 mono. Its basically the exact same thing as the AC3, nothing gained, nothing lost.

The final with PCM 2.0 is still only about 15GB.

IMHO you did the right thing. I HATE re-encoding lossy tracks back into a lossy format due to further degradation of the audio and I would have done the SAME THING: taken the lossy track, edited it in WAV/PCM and then would have left it as WAV/PCM for the release. Granted, nothing gained by doing this, but nothing lost either.
