Sometimes you can tell that the black bars on video are separate from the black bars on the print. It makes no sense it would be a conversion from NTSC because it is a German transfer

The German DVD is electronically matted at about 1.55

(And of course in true open matte you can see the frame overlap, which is outside of even the 1.33 aperture I believe

I know that every time it cuts to an animatronic the matte goes away. I've even seen film cells with a splice from open matte to hard matte
