Still no announcement yet. Last he said was back in 2016 that they had done a wet Gate 4K scan on the original camera negative and did a HDR pass on it.

Considering he’s shooting 2 Avatar films back to back and prepping 2 more in the same time, I doubt we’ll get this anytime soon.

I think this will come by the time Avatar 2 or 3 come (probably in between them).

So yes a stop gap release might be good!

huh, it already had at least 1 scheduled release date last year, was just postponed until early this year, that's what I remember seeing

It's been announced by Bill Hunt as coming out on Blu-ray about 10 times already over the last 10 years. It's not going to happen yet.

I recorded the Special Edition on TNT HD last night.
It is definitely kind of blurry and unsharp for todays standards, but I don't know the quality of the other copies floating around and therefore can share this cap for everyone interested.
