Hi,
Very, very interesting thread...
i spent quite some time on it, and still a long way to go..
But i was just wondering ...anyone already tried to convert the new 4k uhd remasters of Batman and/or Batman Returns in Bd?
Because,even if they already come with remaster Blurays, the result is not good...(too much teal...)
To the point that i prefer the old Blurays to the new ones..
I'am not equiped with 4k, so i can't judge the uhd discs, but from what i read it's much better.
So the only solution, besides a regrade of the remasters blurays, would be to convert those 2 movies into Bd.
So before i even think of trying, i 'd like to know if the result can be better than the existing blurays, and if it's worth it...

Hey, guys. I lost the UHD WEBRip of Die Hard with a Vengeance called Stirb.langsam.Jetzt.erst.recht.1995.German.DL.DTS.Dubbed.2160p.WEBRiP.x265-CODY in a 2-day old (!) brand new hard drive crash and cannot find it anymore. I managed to get Die Hard 2 back, but not 3. Does anybody still have it and is willing to share privately?

Just like @ Chewtobacca recommended, I tried to tonemap Spider-Man 2* with ffmpeg while using a Hable CLI, resulting in a darker film; but if I use Reinhard, it's brighter. Do you know if it's possible to use both of them on ffmpeg? I just want proper details and colors (the most accurate ones, I mean. I know it's still tonemapping), so if there's a way to achieve a middle ground on ffmpeg, it would be perfect.
That's why I came back to Ripbot264. I tweaked the colours, and previewing script gave me these results. Please, give me feedback:
MadVR / Ripbot264 1920x804 x265 10bit CRF 16 (hue=-6,sat=1,bright=-2.5,cont=1.05)
Btw, I've also enabled "EnhanceFineDetails" script because I felt like PQ was blurrier compared to UHDRemux, at least while previewing the whole script on Ripbot264. What do you think?
MadVR / EFS enabled / EFS disabled
*Actually, my original project was tonemapping Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse but, being one of the films that makes the most of HDR capabilities, I think it's just impossible to ressemble the original PQ, whether if you use ffmpeg (Hable or Reinhard. Desat disabled, both of them) or Ripbot264. If you have any ideas or scripts, please tell me.

Change tonemap=hable to tonemap=reinhard in ffmpeg. Both options are present, but they are compromises that make different decisions about what information to discard, so it's meaningless to say that you "just want proper details and colors". Some people prefer hable, while others prefer reinhard. And it can vary from film to film. Try mobius as well! Ideally, each shot would have its own settings. See post#75. But that's not feasible in most cases, so you have to pick your poison.
If by "use both of them" and "middle ground" you mean combining the output of reinhard and hable, then look at AviSynth's Merge() function. But, again, your preferred weight factor would most likely vary from film to film. You could probably do this with ffmpeg as well, but the result is likely to be appallingly slow.

Another regrade. This time, Whiplash (2014) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). Ripbot264 truly is an useful tool!
WHIPLASH: MadVR / Ripbot264 1920x800 x265 10bit CRF 16 (default, but sat=1.1)
Pretty much the same!
TAS2: 4K monitor / Blu-ray (Mastered in 4K) 1920x800 x265 10bit CRF 20/ Ripbot264 1920x800 x265 10bit CRF 18 (same as WHIPLASH)
Not exactly the same as the real 4K presentation (won't ever be), but still better than fuchsia Spidey imo
Feel free to tell me what you think about these regrades!

RipBot264's tonemapping feature. Moreover, you can also tweak colours as you wish (hue, brightness, saturation and contrast).
I don't know if you have already used this tool, but you should definitely check it out, it's really useful!
About Whiplash and TAS2, I'm pretty satisfied but still I'd like to hear more about your thoughts regarding these regrades

Jeeeeesus, how the hell did that get released like that? Did they just not look at it before they released it?
Incidentally, I haven't actually looked at it up close yet but I recently watched the 1080p Blu-ray Disc from the HELLBOY 4K set (yes, the original film, not that woeful recent attempt) and the whole image looked vaguely violet/purplish. I wonder if there's some common thread here with the 4K->1080p discs, if they're maybe just using the same maps every time in some cases, and they're screwed up in the same specific ways...
Spidey certainly looks better here, so well done.
