Frankenstein (1931) Audio Preservation
"Technically," all of those people were right, even if they were saying it for different reasonsWink

The issue of the music elements that are "missing" from the English track still baffles me. I could see how someone could make the argument that it's not actually missing and was merely added on onto a foreign dub - SINGULAR - or, possibly TWO foreign dubs, especially if there were in close proximity in the world (Spain-Portugal, Italy-France[those have had common weird "extra" stuff exclusive only to those dubs for a lot of films I have synced over the years] Sweden-Finland)

But, the fact that I have now seen/heard, the same music stems (in some cases, also containing the original sfx that are on the English track, but not always in same sync) used in FOUR different dubs (the Italian, Spanish, original Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese redub) playing, roughly, the same way in all instances (there are minor differences in the fact that there are extra/missing frames here and there between the sources, but it's the same mix) is amazing. There are also certain thunder cracks that are during Frankenstein's speech before he raises the monster, that should obviously be there, (by comparing the waveform to that same sound effect in other parts of the film that are used on English track) and the "plagiarized" ones used in some other spots on the dubs - there is a clear difference between the two) and these thunder cracks give VERY specific emphasis to some of the speech.

There are other sound effects here and there on the dubs, that I have been able to find traces of on the English track (even on the BD, but barely there) and what really baffles me here is if they were originally there (and the evidence is there, I can show certain parts, where with the right amplification the sound effect "comes out" on the English track) then what the hell happened to them and why has nothing been done about it until now?

Out of so many people on the planet, I finally noticed this almost by accident and am doing something about it. I am worried that some will question whether it's a "faithful" reconstruction in comparison to the "discs" that were mentioned a few posts back (which I still intend on trying to acquire a dub of) because what if those musical elements are not there? Or if some of the sound effects are not there? Does that necessarily mean that they actually don't belong there. I don't believe so, because we have no way of knowing which "version" of the "original" theatrical print the audio is sourced from. Also, especially with media this old, there will be degradation and some things might get "lost in the noise." I guess we'll see about that if/when I manage to examine that source. For now, there are too many things that sound correct and match sound effects that are actually there, and perfectly match what's onscreen where I would be a fool to dismiss them...

Now I gotta run cuz wife has been yelling at me to go to grocery store since I started writing this post, LOL Tongue
Like I mentioned earlier, it looks like the original sound design for this film, considering when it was made, is absolutely phenomenal and I can't wait to be able to share this with others once it's completedOk
