I doubt they’ll do another issue of Ghostbusters with the original 2.0 and 5.1.

So I was going to pick up the new 35th Anniversary UHD in the hope that it has the 70mm mix and perhaps a better 2.0 track than the LD but reports suggest that something is amiss.

At around the 11:48 mark there is a close-up of Sarah quickly turning her head to face the doors before they burst open and Jareth flies in. In the LD PCM track this head-turn is accompanied by an additional short gasp from her. This gasp is also present on the DVD's 5.1 mix. But on the old 2009 BD the gasp goes missing and Sarah turns her head silently.

On the previous 30th Anniversary UHD the gasp is present on the Atmos track but is missing on the hidden 5.1 AC-3 track.

On the new 35th Anniversary UHD the gasp is present on the Atmos track but is missing on both the 5.1 DTS-HD track and the 2.0 track as well!

So my theory is that the gasp was present theatrically (hence it's presence in early home video mixes) and was mistakenly omitted in the 2009 remix. This would mean that the 5.1 on the new UHD is just the old BD 5.1 track and (worse still) that the 2.0 is just a mixdown of this track. Sad

Glad someone was able to check the LD. The only audio I had on hand was the blu-rays and I came to the conclusion that it was added in the Atmos mix because it kind of sounds out of place.
Considering they made it a selling point that this was the original audio, it's pretty shameful if it just ends up being a fold-down. Are there any other changes to verify it is a fold-down or not?

I don't know of any other differences. Two other possible theories (but less likely IMHO):

1. The gasp was present in the original 35mm stereo track but missing from the 70mm 6-Track. This would mean the BD and UHD 5.1 mixes are in fact derived from the 70mm and the 2.0 is a mixdown of that. None of the 5.1 mixes have mono surrounds though for what that's worth.

2. The gasp was not present in any theatrical mix and was added to the LD and other early home video releases. This kind of change is not unheard of (the staff drop sound in Raiders, the replaced song in The Thing). This would mean that both the UHD 5.1 and 2.0 are theatrical mixes.

Unfortunately there's just no way to know for sure.

Did anyone ever sync the LD audio to the 4k? The only thread I see on the matter is this one.

What do you mean? I'm not sure Jim Henson worked on any audio remixes for his films, nor that he personally edited anything himself after release.

Turns out there is also an alternate line of dialogue. At 33:59 when Hoggle is helping Sarah out of the oubliette on the LD audio track he says "Well.. can't be right all the time!". On all of the UHD audio tracks he now says "Well.. can't be right all the time, can we?".

It's not just that the line is cut short in the original it's a completely different take. I can see why they made the change as the original line is too high-pitched for Hoggle almost as if it's been sped up. The new line sounds much more like him. But it is a change to the original audio and pretty much confirms without a doubt that both the 5.1 and 2.0 tracks on the new UHD are remixes.
