Apparently, screeners this year not only have increased encryption but also a lot more personalized watermarks, in order to prevent the fiasco of last year. A Rogue One screener would be near impossible to come by, methinks.

How about VHS screeners? I bagged this recently for my Abyss collection. Time coded though

Doesn't that increase the chances the discs won't play on whatever model player an Academy member happens to own, thus defeating the entire purpose of the screener in the first place?

When there is an high quality workprint available, no screener could be useful anymore...
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/197342 http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/197341 look how bad the screeners are... the worst is heavily cropped on both sides, horrible colors and contrast, low resolution, soft image, and a bit tilted; the other has better colors and is not cropped, but still got contrast problems, low resolution (but more details in comparison to the previous one), is heavily tilted and also stretched somehow, and has judder problems. The workprint is not perfect, of course; it's cropped on the bottom, but got more image on the left side; its resolution is a lot better, as the colors, and, albeit cropped, seems to have the right aspect ratio and does not suffer of tilting, stretching, warping and so on, common problems on almost every screener; many frames during fast shots are combed, but at least it plays smooth. It's something useful until the BD release. |
