Hi Jerry. I've actually been meaning to post back here. Anyways a few days back I ended up reinstalling my old Nero program and discovered that surpringly the glitches are gone but for some reason the Fit to Disc option really only works if I disable the SmartEncoding. At one point I could have sworn SmartEncoding had an automatic option but I'm not seeing it now. Having it on will give me better results quality wise so Id rather do it that way. However even if it's set to Fit to Disc I can't render the footage to the disc if it's too big with SmartEncoding on. It's very confusing. Honestly until a year and a half ago I never really had to work with these settings but for some reason now I do.

I'm discovering a new problem now. For some reason I was losing some features with Nero 10. Rather than reinstall it using the installation disc I decided to download it from the Nero site and reuse my SN. All the features are back as far as i can see. However heres the problem I wanted to bring up. So I have two .mpg files. One is about two hours long but is 5.35gb. The other is about an hour and a half but is 5.55gb. Anyways the first file is able to compress down to 4gb in Nero with SmartEncoding on while the other only compresses down if SmartEncoding is set to Automatic or disabled. Considering SmartEncoding preserves the original quality more I'd rather have it on. Any ideas why the second video won't compress down with SmartEncoding on????

Why not just burn to a DVD9??

As far as second video not wanting to compress... It might already be as compressed (especially if it contains lots of motion which means more data) as the "smartencoding" feature allows to retain the best possible quality and that's the apps way of "telling" you that if you wanna fit it on a DVD5, you will HAVE to deal with quality lossSad

I know quality will be lost either way. I considered DVD9 but part of me doesnt trust them. Most DVD9's Ive burnt skip in most cases but I'll keep it in mind. It's a work in progress but I'll figure it out. Wink Also I just wanna elaborate somewhat what I meant by 'original quality'. If I reencode the video the smoothness of the video is slightly effected but doable while if its not reencoded the original smoothness is retained though quality may still be reduced depending on size.

I've decided to move on from Nero. A few more tests from yesterday with Nero 16 still resulted in those unexplainable glitches. Saying the file is too big is not enough. I was working with Nero 10 for four years and burnt countless DVDs without this problem occurring once. Really at a loss now but I've already committed a year and a half to this using both Nero 10 and 16 and still havent gotten around it. Just gonna look for something else. Thanks guys for your help. I tried.

I moved away from Nero about a decade ago, LOL Tongue

There are many other ways to author a DVD and other programs that you can use to do a solid encode that will fit on a DVD5. In one of the other threads (just search the site for it) I mentioned a "Bitrate Calculator" and a link to a page that helps you figure out, based on fps/length/size of disc/audio/etc., what bitrate you need to aim for.

I remember you mentioning that. I think it was the thread I started when I asked about doing DVDs with additional audio tracks so I'll keep that in mind. My upstairs neighbor who also edits videos has a few programs I'll likely try out so I'm definitely not optionless at the moment! Wink

Could you refresh me on some of this again?? I was skimming through that one folder I made one time but like before the situation involving the bitrate is throwing me off. Hopefully because Im working with videos with one audio track this wont be as complicated as before. I have redownloaded Avidemux 2.5 and DVDAuthorGUI.

Just getting back here after being sick the last week and catching up on things. I saw you sent me this post in a PM and I will try to answer your question soon. (I might still have the answer saved in my "sent PMs" folder from when we discussed this last time, but that might just be my memory playing tricks on me)
