Which lossless video codec to use?
#21
Try to open two or more files encoded with it, and then save always using it... and let me know... maybe it's only my old PC - likely...

Magic is great in terms of size, however Lagarith works a little faster on my machine. The results, of course, vary from project to project. On occasion, I still use huffyuv too.

Well i must admit i never tried opening multiple Magic files at one time. Are they large files or do they vary in size or?

I'm working on a slightly older machine and multiple Magic files choke up my system a little bit which is why I only use it for projects that will have a single video source. For multiple sources, I prefer Lagarith because my system can handle it better. Filesize, in my case, has little to nothing to do with performance... I suspect that it has everything to do with the compression/decompression algorithms which require more resources for Magic.

So what would you consider old machine then, or old CPU? Pentium 4 Big Grin

my machine is a nearly 5 year old Dell Studio 1555 laptop with T6500 2.1Ghz dual-core, 4GB of RAM, Radeon HD 4570 GPU and tons of external HDDs for space (LOL)

Ah ok so not quite a Pentium 4 then haha. Yeah mine has a E4500 2.2Ghz, I do plan on building a new pc with a i7-4790 soon. With either 16gb or 32gb of ram.

I still use HuffYUV to capture analog video - it's lightweight, and works like a charm!
Use MagicYUV if I want to play the encoded video flawlessly - when I play Lagarith (HD) files, they always play slo-mo, and take forever when you jump to a given point, while MagicYUV works like a normal, lossy compressed files... no, it works better!
Lagarith is now turned back to be used for every temporary file needed for my projects.

Happy to know we have all pretty outdated machines... Wink

That's another reason to NOT use MagicYUV:

EDIT: Nevermind, it also occured with Lagarith, so it is NOT related to codec used!
