I've seen ANH:R. Spicediver managed to make an unwatchable incoherent film watchable, coherent, and enjoyable! At least view the edit, not just the change list.
I'm not saying it's not a good edit, or that he didn't make an unwatchable film watchable. I never preemptively disagreed with that. I'm saying that for me the kind and amount of effort put into ANH:R is of the highest caliber. Spicediver may have done a lot of work and put in lots of time as well. I just feel like Adywan goes far beyond what Spicediver and any other FanEditor has done for a single FanEdit. It's one thing to pour hours of your time into grinding away in some editing software. It's another to do that AND build detailed replica models, film actors in professional costumes, and work in the most minute of details that most people wouldn't even notice had they not been put into a list of changes. To me that's going above and beyond what most, if not all other, FanEditors do, and I give him the highest respect because of it. That's all.

Some of the stuff in ANH:R is quite silly to be honest, like electrifying the hypodermic on the syringe carried by the IT-O Interrogator droid. What possible use does that have? It's still 99% the same cut of the film, and for me a good Fanedit is a cut that is different to the original and can be characterised as such. Dune is a completely unwatchable movie IMO. It's one of those DVDs that I own that I wish I never bought - except that Spicediver fixed that now.

I agree with both of you. Adywan's could be considered a fan restoration instead of fan edit, and he worked so hard to reconstruct or build from scratch so many shots, that is not possible to not express awesomeness. Haven't watched Spicediver's, but I'm pretty sure that a good faneditor would be able to turn an unwatchable flick into a bearable one - yep, Dune is, despite many interesting ideas, a so boring film...

I know, I know...
I must confess I discovered Adywan lately - too late, indeed... not that I was not aware of it, but just because I thought that a "pure" edition was better (read: GOUT or nothing)... how wrong was I...
Also, I want to say thanks to Harmy for his various Despecialized and Semi-Despecialized editions!

Yeah, I think that's the best way to put it. ANH:R is a restoration, D:TAE is a FanEdit. Makes a difference in how you think about them. So yeah, I can see different ways of holding them in highest regard.
Sure, the syringe thing is silly, but that's so minute it doesn't come anywhere near being an annoyance. The fact that he cut out the majority of the annoying stuff to begin with is what I notice!

punchyouinthenuts doesn't sound like a friendly user name but I'm a bit old school here.
