What's the point, when google exists? Automatic replacements should be avoided, they can mess up at times, for example when the poster had another meaning in mind in a particular context.
Poll: Would you like to see acronyms automically replaced with their corresponding words (like I I R C -> if I recall correctly) ? You do not have permission to vote in this poll. |

Always possibe to use another syntax, like \I I R C - with a backslash at the beginning...

Then again, maybe it's not such a great idea after all ...
And that's just under "A" ... followed by a non-letter ...

Thought about a tooltip instead: https://www.w3schools.com/howto/tryit.as...ss_tooltip
Tried to implement using mycode, but it didn't work...

The stand-alone code, copied to it's own HTML file, works perfect on this (FireFox) browser:
Of course, I made the .tooltip to 0.75 opacity so both the words and the tips (the other word's tip is "Python") look classier. Confirm that you have your local test file as "trusted" in your browser. These things do not work if the page is not trusted. Also, you'd probably want to organize the words and tips as pairs in an indexed table for easier additions, deletions, and editing.

my vote is for the tooltip, with a list of technical abbreviations

I don't see any real need for any of this. The list in this thread should be enough for people to refer to if they really need to post OT.com-ish.

This isn't Twitter or the era of limited texting. If people use abbreviation, they meant to use them instead of spelling it out. Automatically substitution of the abbreviation is changing something that no one wanted changed. |
