Solaris (2002) - worth it?
#1
Question
The BD has been released few weeks ago; according to this forum (http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=287188), it misses at least two frames, while HDTV misses 5 seconds.

Color grading is slightly different: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/212472

Are these reasons enough to start a project? (apart obviously adding further audio/subs tracks)

To be honest, no. I love this film, but this seems a disappointing release. The label has clearly done the best they can with an old master, but when it's hardly distinguishable from a middling HDTV stream, what's really been accomplished?

By the way, I don't know about you but that colour change looks more like a flawed colourspace conversion than a deliberate creative choice...

Viewing zoomed (x400), Blu-ray noise patterns look ever-so-slightly processed while 4-HD looks just plain noise with ever-so-slightly less defined edges. To further examine them in a paint program, they came off the webpage as JPG's ("JFIF" in-file headers), not PNG's. Regardless, they are almost indistinguishable, no crush, and slightly blown on razor-thin bright edges. PNG's might show the captures as being even better.

How about a 2-frame restoration project with Blu-ray color-timed to the 4-HD? Then you'll have an excuse to add the Russian 2-part TV film (1968) and movie (1972) as extras!

BTW, never knew that the 2002 US movie came out on US Blu-ray. Oh .. that's right .. it didn't! What's our (US) problem?!   Angry

I'd be more interested in seeing a project based on the original Russian film. The Criterion blu has beautiful colours but there's a Russian Mosfilm remaster out there somewhere with much better PQ. If I could get my hands on that I'd love to bring it's coolours back closers to the US/UK release...
