I only have the LD box. Essentially what Warner did on these was to insert master stereo soundtrack cues into a mono track and stereoized a few things here and there but it primarily stays mono much like the early 90's video remixes such as the stereoized Thunderball that is purely mono with some sound spread around due to the stereo score being inserted.

The DH LDs have good fidelity for what they are and unlike the later 5.1 DVD era remixes retain the original effect from what I can tell. I was quite surprised at how good they sounded. From what I can tell I don't know if even the oldest analog only LD has mono. I haven't found a VHS copy yet that isn't reprocessed so this may be a title that can only be found with mono on Beta or a print source. I'm still trying to find the Bullitt mono which is apparently on Beta or the analog track of one Japanese LD according to rumors.

Yes MF is very TV-ish but as Hang Em High also was it's tempting to lay blame on the director Ted Post, however Post despite being a friend of Eastwood's was forced to bow to CE's wishes to do single takes and rush it out cheaply as "his fans wouldn't care". That said, MF is IMO the only sequel that really works as all the others are extremely problematic. None match the original which is a darn masterpiece.

Would it be feasible for any audio whizzes out there to make some sorta hybrid track by using the dialogue-free sequences from the mono foreign language dubs included on the DVD/BDs? Quality would no doubt vary but, y'know...

I'd love to see the audio restored for each movie in the series but I'll take just DIRTY HARRY over nothing at all.
