[Proposal] 20,000 leagues under the sea - UAR

Today, during the usual HDD cleaning from unused files, I've found a very old, unfinished project - 20,000 leagues under the sea; idea was to add needed soundtracks and few more, maybe a slight color correction and noise reduction.

Then, I noted I have two versions... guess what? Yep, they have different aspect ratios! So, why don't give it a try with an UAR version?

Well, they have also very different color grading, so they won't always match perfectly, but for most of the shots they seem to blend pretty well; for the others, one of the sources must be used.

Another fan here, have a custom bluray made from a vudo hdx cap (looks like a newer transfer) + a personal cap from Film Four HD (older transfer). Not sure if they are the same as what you have spoRv but looking forward to your UAR project if you decide to finish it.

X5gb, it would be interesting to see screenshots from your two caps; for comparison, here is one underwater frame:

that shows the distinct difference between color grading; second one is from Disney Channel, with logo removed.

Would be great if you could gram screenshots from yours - the frame number of the ones posted in this thread are in the image file name.

If it happens that we could find out two caps with different aspect ratios, but the same color gradings, it would be nice to use them as source, to get a better result.

I'll go through my collection, find them and post once I have, the Film Four one is the same as the Disney Channel (older transfer), the Vudu HDX is from a slightly newer transfer, most probably the same frame difference as you have. There is also an AMZN one available which is most probably the same transfer as the newer Vudu.

A little less than three months ago I wrote a short wish piece about Criterion’s forthcoming Bluray of Jack Clayton‘s The Innocents (’61), or more precisely about how sublime it would be if Criterion was to do to The Innocents what Disney did with its Bluray remastering of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, i.e., eliminate the CinemaScope mumps effect.

Even if on blu-ray.com there is no trace of it...

It seems there are two main color grading and aspect ratio, the old one (DVD, Disney HDTV), and the new one (Amazon, I-Tunes, and I'm pretty sure BD); if the BD is the same as WEB-DL (and some HDTV) as suspected, well, Disney didn't removed the mumps effect (anamorphic lenses distortion), at least not in all scenes, even if I must admit I'm over critic, and notice everything wrong...

It would be great to discover a third version with the same aspect ratio OR color grading of one these two!

About the iTunes version:

this is not true in all the shots, as you can see in the previous comparison in the very same review. Usually, new version has more image on the right, while old one has more on left and bottom; sometimes they have the same width, but old one has more on bottom, and other times, as written, the new one has more on both sides and on top, while less on bottom.

That's why an UAR version could be a nice addition, to get as much image as possible.

That article does not mention a released bluray and that review by Bluray Authority I call bs on. Maybe, Disney remastered it intending to release it to bluray but put the brakes on it at some point and only released to streaming and hdtv. There is only a bootleg available claiming to be original which as far as I am aware is based on the original encoded Vudu HDX source I acquired many moons ago. There is definitely not a Legit Disney bluray worldwide.

Disney routinely restore/remaster old films only to keep them in 'the vault'.

20,000 got a restoration years ago and the new HD master is presumably the one that showed up on HD streaming and airings with major teal infestation.

The difference between ratios you're likely getting is due to many early 2.55 scope films being chopped down or shown as 2.35 on earlier video masters either by shrinkage or using cropped sources or by cropping out the sides. The old LD is a different master and IIRC does this. It has a few color differences-most notably the opening title curtains are completely different in color.

It would be nice to get every source side by side to see the minute differences.

... it's the one my old online buddy zantafio made years ago.  It's a re-encoded HDX VUDU VOD capture made in 2012. For the time, it was very good and a big improvement on earlier HDTV caps.
