Resolution/Aspect Ratio Cheat Sheet

There is a great guide that I found here:

It has the H by W for each of the major resolutions. Which is particularly useful if you are cropping out black bars in an official release.

Here are the resolutions used in the home cinema world.

4kHD/2160p (QuadHD)

I'd be careful with that if you're planning on using it for cropping. Every Blu Ray is a little bit different, the properly cropped height is not always exactly 803 pixels. I've seen 804, 805,806,... Which makes sense, since there's no technical limitation preventing any arbitrary height.

Also, home cinema 4:3 doesn't come as 1920x1440, that would be outside Blu Ray specs, it comes with black bars left and right and a height of 1080 pixels, with a precise 4:3 image resulting in a cropped 1440x1080. The whole 1080p naming convention is an inconsistent mess though if you ask me.

Still interesting as an overview I guess, and for personal projects I think those would definitely be good guidelines to go. Assuming one doesn't feel like quickly whipping out the calculator. Big Grin

Oh for sure about the variations. You are right there.

This meant for a general guide for cropping going in. My assumption is black bars are put back on for final result of 1920 x 1080p (for example)

This post is an actual lifesaver cause I've wasted way too much time figuring out what resolution I should crop my footage to get a Panavision look since all the guides I've found do it by the second value (____ x 1080) instead of the first (1920 x ____).

Have you gotten HDV mixed up by any chance? The way I understand your list, the second value denotes the ratio between the actual pixel sizes, which would be 4/3 with 1440x1080, but in your list it's written as 16/9. Whereas the first value seems to denote the "normalized" value once the PAR is applied, which would be 16/9, but denoted as 4/3 in your list.
