Stereo Remix from the early-90s
I'm curious what they'll do about the audio mix.
I've caught a print of this once and it was a stereo remix from the early-90s that sounded too good, if that makes sense.
I appreciate good audio, but it's distracting to see older pre-Dolby films futzed like this.

Incredibly Grainy
Once Upon a Time in the West, like many of Leone's westerns, was shot in 2-perf Techniscope. This is inherently an incredibly grainy format that looks really bad for home video -- a postage-stamp-sized frame roughly the same height as 16mm. It looked even worse in the theater, because of the optical blow-ups and anamorphic conversion involved. It's never gonna be super-sharp, because the frame size is so small, plus it's a 45-year-old movie.

I record most Leone stuff on french TV (but can't extract to the hard drive), last I checked it's always the same copy of Once with Bronson rising on the platform. I may be wrong, but it's always the old DVD copy blown up.

Dipped into the Paramount release Blu Ray agin yesterday. After 20 minutes I took it out and put in the French Tv broadcast HD I made a copy of. The difference still astonishes me. The colour is simply gorgeous. Why this couldn't have been used for the Blu Ray release is beyond me. Wonder what the Kino Lorber discs will be like.
Only A Fistful of Dynamite hasn't been shown on French tv is a gorgeous HD transfer, yet!

ADDITIONS TO PREVIOUSLY ANNOUNCED TECHNICAL SPECS AND BONUS FEATURES:

    NEW color grading was applied to BOTH the Extended version (4K Blu-ray) and Theatrical International version (Blu-ray). The color grading will now be consistent between both versions of the film.

    NEW Restored 2.0 Mono audio, after going back to the 1993 MGM laserdisc PCM monaural track.

    NEW Blu-ray Theatrical Cut - 4K scan of a 1967 35mm IB tech print   is the secondary source for approximately 10 seconds of content that is not present in the extended version of the film. This comprises of 5 shots total:

        The optical flip ending in Tuco's neck back around the noose. (Timecode 01:24:13:03- 14 frames)

        Tuco shoving the "Open/Closed" sign into the storekeeper's mouth. (Timecode 01:37:46:20- 5 seconds, 10 frames - this was cut short in the 2017 Kino theatrical version)

        An extreme closeup on Blondie's eyes shortly before Tuco's gang comes barging through the door - features a hidden jump cut that is present on both the 35mm IB tech print and the Laserdisc release but not in the extended cut - (Timecode 01:41:54:15- 1 second, 14 frames- not present in the 2017 Kino theatrical version)

        The fade up on Tuco and Blondie riding up to the mission after forcing him to walk through the desert (Timecode 02:02:45:19- 1 second, 3 frames- cut short in the 2017 Kino)

        The tail of the shot of the train leaving the station. (Timecode 02:38:22:08- 2 seconds, 1 frame- cut short in the 2017 Kino)

    NEW recently restored German Theatrical Trailer courtesy of Jordan Krug and Benji Heran



There was voting over facebook for which version to be released.

So, they are not releasing the extended version now, only theatrical.

You may recall a news article that highlights Will & Devan's efforts to preserve the International Cut. The article caught the attention of Kino who contacted them, and they put Kino's people in touch with us to help out with restoration of the International Cut using the MGM/L'Immagine Ritrovata 4K master available to them and filling in some spots with our 35mm scans.
