I'm also looking to boost up my MacBook pro 2013, with OWC Aura Pro 6G SSD but they are expensive, come at around 450 bucks for 2tb.
However, you can have a whole project and more, on internal drive only, no more external USB 3 lags.

today, 1GB jumped to 136€ from 119, and 512GB to 79€ from 69...

Ah well, I'm cancelling my order. Turns out the model I ordered (Sandisk SSD Plus) is - while cheap - some weird inferior technology that completely breaks performance-wise when the access is anything but sequential. They even get slower than regular HDDs in certain situations. Quite the joke. Just a warning to anyone considering those. The Ultra 3D models by Sandisk seem to have better technology in that regard.

As written before, a "simple" SATA - while I think it's surely better than HDDs, in normal operation its superior speed could pass almost unnoticed in some instances, while NVME PCI-E are clearly much MUCH faster! And Sabrent are back to previous good prices, also on amazon.de... check out your motherboard, and if compatible, get one of them... NOW!

Nothing to do with SATA in this case. It's something to do with a particular hardware-controller combination or something like that. Apparently a lot of cheap SSDs use this type of technology to save cost, hence why a lot of them may mysteriously seem rather slow.
Not saying NVME isn't even faster, but you can definitely get good performance from an SSD that is far better than any normal HDD, but it has to be a proper SSD apparently.

Sure there are a lot of different reasons - SATA Vs NVME, controller, cell types etc. - but worst NVME is at least 3x/4x faster than best SATA.
I want to leave SATA ports free for good ol' HDDs - plenty of space for reasonable money, today - and use NVME for OS and eventual fast project "cache" space.

IMHO (talking about NVME SSDs) Samsung are the best - but also very expensive - while Crucial are quite cheap, but very slow (compared to Samsung and others)...
Sabrent has almost the same speed of Samsung, with prices a bit higher than Crucial, so...

I'm a bit torn, a MacBook Pro 2013 OWC SSD 2tb upgrade is 450 bucks.
In the used market, I can get an old MacBook Pro 15" for 550 bucks (but will need to upgrade to SSD inside, and maybe a second HDD to replace the DVD player). Do you think I should rather just get my SSD expansion? |
