There are a couple of different programs out there, but I use Video Enhancer for the SuperResolution technique. There are more details here: http://www.infognition.com/VideoEnhancer/

They have a 30-day trial there so you can test this out. The program itself is $40, so very reasonable.

So i tried Video Enhancer software on a dvd movie. The frame rate came out too 19fps? That and the aspect ratio was all wrong. They have some work to do to make this better.

Two things...

First, did you read the instructions for the app? The AR will come out all wrong if you do not set the upscaling to DOUBLE the original frame size (and if you need bigger than that, like when upscaling DVD to 1080) then you need to upscale it twice (although you can just load the SR plugin twice in the VE app) DO NOT resize in the app to the dimensions you want for "final" result. There is something inn the documentation of the app that clearly states this. So for a 720x480 video, first you would set it to 1440x960 and then to 2880x1920 and then "downscale" it to 1920x1080 in your editing app. YES, this sucks and adds an extra "layer"/step to the process, but I have tested it and it works with rather nice results. trying to "resize"/upscale it directly from 720x480 to (i.e.) 1920x1080 will produce incorrect AR and inferior picture quality compared to doing it "the right way."

Second, I also had one of my test videos give me a 19.982fps (even though all the frames were processed correctly and once I adjusted the framerate using vdub, the video aligned with the source perfectly) I noticed the app does this when you are working with a 23.976 progressive video that still has pulldown applied to get the frame rate to 29.970fps. Here, the solution is simple, remove the pulldown (I used tsMuxer) from the source and then the output framerate will be correct. Indeed, this is "sloppy" development of the app, but this is what I discovered and figured I would share as I'm sure others might experience this "problem" as well.

Try upscaling something in the app again, this time keeping in mind the issue of only "double the size" each time and THEN resize to final dimensions... The results might surprise you like they did me

Is there any advantage of using the stand alone program over the plugins for vdub or Affect Effects?

D'oh! Yeah i must have over looked that detail. So are you saying after i have encoded the file too 2880x1920 with Video Enhancer, too then resize with avisynth or some sort of video editing software?

@ PDB - In my tests, (only comparing to using the vdub plugin, as I don't have adobe) the VE app processed a video about 10% faster than using the plugin in vdub. Why? I have no idea, but this was consistent throughout all of my tests.

@ DoomBot - No worries, if it wasn't for the fact that I was sleep deprived when I started researching the app and that particular piece of info was the thing that "stuck out like a sore thumb," I would have missed it too and been in "your shoes." And YES, that's what I'm saying about the resizing to "proper" dimensions AFTER you SR upscale the footage.
