[Request] The Thing (2011) CGI darkening
#1
Thought I'd throw this one out to you guys to see if anyone is interested enough to 'fix' the CGI in the 2011 The Thing by darkening it as seen in Rob Agers 'Visual effects psychology: THE THING (1982 vs 2011)' which does make it look a lot better.

I'd say try applying some sort of Film Print Stock emulation over the movie. It might do the trick in darkening the CGI as well as having the charm of there being an added filmic look. On that note, I wonder though how the movie looked like on a 35mm print if any were made (I mean, I know there were 35mm trailers of the movie existed in the least).

I am pretty sure that I do remember seeing some 35mm prints for the complete film on Ebay a few years back. I could be wrong though of course.

Cinemas hadn't fully switched to digital by this point so The Thing 2011 was released on 35mm and as a DCP. It was shot anamorphic 35mm with a DI grade, I rewatched this recently and it has a touch of the orange/teal about it.
I think the plan was always to have a combination of practical/digital creatures ie puppets augmented with digital legs/tentacles etc. It's just unfortunate that the decision was made to swap out the puppets completely

Indeed, someone somewhere clearly didn't know the audience for this film wanted practical effects.
