Top Gun 1986 4K

Here's an observation that i made comparing the Special Collectors Edition to the 4K edition, The Paramount Logo (A Gulf + Western Company Variant) is missing at the end credits of the 4K version so it runs 9 seconds shorter than the original, i guess being due to having the titles and the credits redone, and the fact that they are now a ViacomCBS company!

I think this had to do with the fact the OCN probably didn't have Paramount logos attached to the head and tails, and were most likely added to Interpositives and release prints.

Watched the UHD last night, and I was a bit disappointed. Top Gun is one of my all time favorites and I have watched it more times than I can count.

I didn't like the color timing and there were some instances of clear DNR application that really bothered me (I'm very sensitive to DNR and EE). The framing is also significantly zoomed in compared to the old regular BD and 3D (which is the one with more picture information). And for last but not least, one of the great benefits of HDR which is highlight information seems to come shout of the original BD as well, at least in some instances (https://caps-a-holic.com/c_list.php?c=5474).

In my opinion these are some odd choices for a remaster that should have been the definitive version.

IMO, the colors and framing of the original BD are still the best so far. Too bad it's a very digital looking transfer, with EE and DNR.

The positives for the UHD are of course the resolution, compression and lack of EE.

ps: I watched it on regular HDR, but there may be some other benefits brought in by the Dolby Vision layer

on the previous page you mentioned muxing the Original 70mm mix and the LD PCM. What's the source of the 70mm mix and which LD has the best PCM mix?

I do have the other BD editions and that intended to use for audio as well, but the ones you mentioned should be even better.

Yes, I believe so. I think this remaster needs it’s brightness Toned down a bit.

Congratulations PDB, I just been over your thread and the colors look spot on. You nailed it IMO!

I had never heard of the subtitle option to mask it back to scope, very ingenious solution.

The 70mm mix is the 5.1 True HD Audio track on the Collector's Edition Blu Ray of Top Gun. The Beefed up Remix is the 6.1 DTS HD Master mix on the CE BD. The original Dolby Surround mix is on the Laserdisc, and the Dolby 2.0 Mixes on the 1998 and 2005 DVD's

I've read on foruns elsewhere that the DTHD track on the CE is a very problematic track (I don't really remember why, but I'll try to find out). Anyway, it's a 5.1-EX track, so I don't really think it's the 70mm mix.

Based on PDB information and from what I gathered later, I do believe the LD is indeed the best source for the 70mm mix. Maybe the original DVD ports over that track, but I'm not sure.

I'm Not hearing any new SFX in the Amtos Mix, but this might need LD audio.
