I feel like 4K HDR is a downgrade comparable to Blu-ray SDR

Blu-ray contrast makes it look better, sure, but the UHD is not shown in actual HDR (it's converted to SDR) and probably doesn't look as dark and washed out for real as it does here.

It actually looks very dark and washed out on my Bravia TV that's why I compared both sources. Smth is wrong with this 4k remaster, other movies I have in HDR are bright and clear but this one is missing so much details in the dark areas.

that last shot comparison of Superman's close-up is weird

the framing is a little different across all three images, but this one seems like Superman slightly shifts position relative to the Smallville background... almost like they got the other image from the 3D version

yeah, unfortunately the UHD HDR grade is very much crushed on this one. It's been a while since I watched it, but I think the base layer is not so much compromised, so if you can raise tha gamma setting on your Bravia (I also use one my main setup and along with an LG CX OLED), it can make things a lot better.

A lot of UHDs have what I'd call improper gamma level, so even if your TV is properly calibrated, for HDR titles, very often you have to mess with your settings to actually make it right.
It's a real hassle and the percentage of crushed UHD is really really high in my book.

As I said, fortunately, most of them are 'soft' crushed, meaning just crushed on the HDR enhancement layer. So it can be fixed by TV settings.

Some of the UHDs I recall that are 'hard' crushed (crushed on the base layer) and hence, cannot be fixed, are Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 2, Black Panther. And just about every early Universal Pictures catalog title and many Warner early ones also are "soft crushed".

Hi, yes I know the gamma trick for HDR.

I'll just wait for new remastered version of MOS in the near future.

For the time being I'll enjoy the Blu-ray version.
