Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004) 35mm Int'l Trailer Scanning
#1
Hello all,

I am entirely new to this so I apologize in advance if this the wrong place for this, but I recently acquired the International Trailer for "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" from 2004 on 35mm film. As a bonus, quite a bit of it is Open Matte. See examples below:

As you can see I've been able to get decent stills for reference, but I'd love to get it scanned to a high quality digital format. I've got no idea how to go about doing that or where to go that would take the project on, so I thought I'd try here and see if anyone could point me in the right direction. I'd prefer not to build my own scanner or buy one as this is really a one-off project for me. Not worth the investment in a scanner at the present time.

Let me know if you can help or know anyone who can! Love the work you guys do.

I had completely forgotten about this film. I recall seeing it in a movie theatre when it came out in Denmark. Very.... Odd film...

Odd indeed, but wonderful (to me personally)

No one has any info they could share about getting this trailer scanned in?

If this trailer is open matte, does that mean that the VHS and fullscreen DVDs also are?

Just saw this after being away for awhile. The VHS/Fullscreen DVDs contain some shots that are slightly more open matte than the widescreen version, but nowhere near to this level. This trailer reveals the full 35mm negative on every non-VFX shot.

Here's some quick comparisons I did up using the 35mm Stills, Blu-Ray, and Fullscreen DVD.
Red Lines are the Widescreen Blu-Ray. Yellow Lines are the Fullscreen DVD.

As you can see, occasionally the Fullscreen DVD opens up a bit more than the Widescreen matte, but not much and nowhere near the amount of extra image this 35mm trailer provides.

It's possible that the trailer dates from when the film was still being edited and that the finished DI was hard matted (hence why the 4:3 DVD is severely cropped). This happened to Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban where the flat trailers showed most footage with extra height, while the finished DI and release prints were probably hard matted to 2.35 hence all other "tall" AR versions cropping.

Yes, perhaps so. Makes a lot of sense considering when I was trying to do some of these comparisons the shots did not match the final film (the trailer used different takes). That's likely what happened. Even cooler to see some of these shots in the full 35mm then!
