There’s a film I’m surprised no one has thought of updating the cgi in 1995 jumanji and using the uhd as a base upgrading the hdr to Dolby vision on top of the 4k resolution. upgrading the cgi because most of it takes you out of the movie now sadly.

Moved this thread and the Star Wars one you started because, even if I can understand you are surprised that nobody did not upgraded CGI for these movies, take in account that if studios did not invest time/money in these, what let you think that anybody would invest their own time/money for such kind of projects? We are not talking about an individual or two that spend some weeks and few bucks - we are talking about high skilled CGI teams that need A LOT of time and hardware and software that cost $$$... said that, nothing is impossible - remember the story of the author of "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow"? - still, it would be really hard that some fan here (and everywhere else) would try this kind of task!

So, you are free to start threads like this in the future, but please, just post them in this subforum. Thanks!

P.S. I would love to see unfinished CGI in "A Sound of Thunder" to be replaced with contemporary, great ones... but nobody would do it, sadly; the movie was not that bad at the end, apart those CGI.

Sporv the reason why i was asking is there are some people working updating cgi in some movies like
Sky Shazad with the original tron and I think Kathy Ross when it comes to Superman the final cut too name maybe a few. I don’t know if there’s other people who are doing this kinda work.

Are these persons only fans, hence making the work on their own time and money, or are they paid by studios or some patron?
And, are they doing the work on the whole movies, or only on selected shots/scenes? And what's about the result?

Yeah, it makes sense with fans. From a corporate perspective, there are very few reasons to ever really update CGI in a movie. Usually, it's only really something you see with a big-budget title that companies KNOW will rake in big bucks on home video and the restoration is under the supervision of the director—supposing their name is also big enough to support such an endeavor. It's why you have revisions in the Indiana Jones or Star Wars franchises, the latter of which being essentially completely overhauled by George Lucas, as well as the whole Titanic remaster and 3D conversion where James Cameron had all of the effects re-composited.

Jumanji unfortunately is not really a big title like those other ones in comparison. On top of that, I imagine it'd be difficult to really easily update the CGI in an efficient manner unless someone kept the old master files for the digital effects to perhaps try and get working in a modern workflow and re-render the footage for re-compositing. So it's extremely unlikely this will ever happen—at least officially.

I wasn’t really thinking of it being done officially I was talking more like someone doing a fan edit project. Same goes for what I was taking about with all the good cgi in the original Star Wars trilogy and all the cgi in the prequels. I would like to see a fan edit the cgi too look less out of place in other words as close to modern day cgi as possible same goes for the original jumanji.

I have had the thought that studios might want to update some of the CGI in late 90s blockbusters where it stands out fairly bad. In particular, Sony released a 4K release of Godzilla '98. I doubt anyone will miss those CGI baby Godzillas or that CGI Scorpion King from The Mummy Returns.

Heck, I'd love to see some fans do deepfakes for movie continuity. Put Claudia Wells into Back to the Future Parts II and III or Jodie Foster into Hannibal. Stuff like that.

I always wondered what a Deepfake of Michael Baldwin would be like in Phantasm 2 or Jackie Chan in Big Trouble In Little China as both were originally intended to act in those movies respectively for curiosity sake.

Yeah that’s why I was asking if some fan out there could make the cgi in jumanji and the six original Star Wars movies because the cgi aged horrible in jumanji’s case the scene with the monkeys is a great example of how bad the cgi aged in 4k. it really really takes you out of the movie that’s what I’m talking about have the cgi updated to not only not take you out of the movie but immerse yourself into the world more. like in the case of the mostly the Star Wars prequels but some parts of the original trilogy as well. I saw what the corridor crew did with the Death Star trench scene where darth Vader is taking out rebel x wings and while some parts took me out. basically when they made the x wings move that was the only thing that took me out. but yeah that’s an example of how great modern effects are for some movies and a reason why if they are a group willing to do it. they would be my number one choice to upgrade the cgi in both the 6 Star Wars films and jumanji.
