I can't see why it wouldn't work with betamax.
LD player's have built-in TBC so running through a pass-through DVD recorder would only be of value if the comb filter was better than that of the capture device. Only a handful of LD player's had a good comb filter, the rest were quite primitive.
Doing a quick skim of the Internet it seems the Panasonic DMR-ES10/15 are still the best DVD recorders for TBC, by all accounts later models are not recommended. I don't know about other makes

I highly recommend the Toshiba RD-XS34 as a DVD recorder with an outstanding TBC. I was thrilled with the tape captures I got with it. It was a noticeably superior TBC than other recorders I tried (e.g. Panasonic DMR-E85H, Pioneer DVR-531H).
