I agree. The rest of the UHD is really good, except for Subway and exorcism.

You are doing the exact version I would do, if I put in the work to understand the colour matching process.

Originally I was going to take an SDR tone map of the UHD and replace the exorcism with Aluminium Falcon’s version.

I’m really pleased you are doing this.

Ok.
It seems postimage doesn't like The Exorcist, wtf?
...

Anyway, I found some strange glitches in the encoded file. I noticed some discrepancies in framecount between the rendered and the encoded file, and I found duplicated frames and other stuff. Very weird.
5 days thrown to the trash can. I was using my old laptot (which is pretty much the only use it gets nowadays). Gotta try again. Sad

If there is something I learned in this line of work is that good things take time indeed but not before a LOT of frustration.
Do your thing!

Ok, reporting back.

It seems the file is actually fine. The "problem" has to do with GOP size. Hybrid has a default max value set at 25 (that is 25s). Big max GOP sizes give x265 freedom to more efficiently encode a file, but can slow down seeking if too big. When I opened in virtualdub, this morning and I saw the duplicated frames, it was actually virtualdub messing up, not the file being wrong. I checked playback and I didn't see any of those things I saw in virtualdub.

I'm not reencoding it, but I'll be lowering the max GOP size for the next time. I'm reading that 25 max value doesn't really make sense when encoding a 120 minute film with a final size of 60-65GB (something like 10 secs is good enough)
