Moving the forum
#11
Alright I did it differently. I simply deleted the forum on the old host, leaving only simple HTML message saying it has been moved, updated the database on the new host and "reopened" the forum.

Right now some users see the forum under new IP address (and are able to use it), but others do not. We have to wait for the DNS servers to fully update.

I guess it wasn't so bad, because it made the forum's downtime shorter for everyone, but there has been a short (about an hour I think) period when two copies of the forum existed simultaneously on both hosts, visible to different users. No posts or PMs have been lost, so it should be all good.

Yeah, it looks like everything is working smoothly. :victory:

I experienced two down-times, the first for a couple of hours and the second for about five hours.

I was also still able to make numerous posts when it said "Your board status is currently set to closed," LOL Tongue

Nice one Feallan. Not sure we "need" such top-of-the-line stuff, but we appreciate it!

Pretty sure all DNS servers have updated by now. If anyone you know somehow still can't access the site, let me know.

There has been an issue after the move which prevented fanres e-mail (registration e-mails, PM notifications etc) from being sent. It should be completely resolved now.

Btw as I was fixing stuff, I finally decided to check what the hell is wrong with the contact us form. Now I know that MyBB code is dumb enough to try and send the e-mail using the address specified by the user. Understandably, when some random server wants to access your e-mail account, without any authentication, it's seen as abuse and prevented. This affects ALL e-mail sent using the site, so when you use "send X user an e-mail" option, the e-mail never gets there. I will probably fix it when I feel like it, but it requires digging into MyBB's PHP code, so I don't feel like it now.

Also, fanres.com and www.fanres.com automatically redirect to forum.fanres.com again.

Yep it sucks big time. I wonder how did this happen, who programmed it this way? I mean, that's a kindergarten level mistake.
