Yes, as it average the details, and also the noise - luma and chroma.

Hi all, I'm interested in seeing how the PaNup process would work on the Hammer classic, The Curse of Frankenstein (1957). The Blu-Ray is problematic at best, and it'd be curious to see what detail could be salvaged by using PaNup to upconvert the WB NTSC and PAL DVDs. I have both discs on my computer.

That said, I'm a complete novice at using scripts. (I can't even find the PaNup script in this thread.) If you guys could help, it'd be much appreciated.

The PaNup is a technique, not an actual script... you could apply it using any software, even VirtualDub for example; the most important thing is to align both sources perfectly, temporally and spatially, to obtain the best result - even a pixel off, and you have some quality loss!

Which softare are you using?

Gotcha. In that case, I don't actually know which software I should use. I'm on a Mac and completely open to suggestions. If there are no options, I can use VirtualDub on an older PC.

A fellow Hammer fan. That UK bluray is next to terrible. 

Falcon you might want to look for the US iTunes version which is in HD or the old monster HD recording (that one is hard to find). Both are from the Warner Bros master which is different from the Hammer UK master. The Warner is far from perfect but a bit better then the uk bluray.

PDB, helpful advice! I didn't know the iTunes used the Warner master and that there was an HD recording. Not to derail the thread, but between the iTunes and the HD recording, is there one that's slightly better, in your opinion?

Hey Falcon, I don't want to derail this thread so PM me here on Fanres. The long and short of it is the itunes is 2 GB so its pretty small but I have a copy and can help you with that. The monster HD recording I've been searching for a while now. Its hard to find but out there (its also suppose from a release print since it had reel change markers).

I want to use this technique with my restoration, but how should I deal with the PAL speedup on DVD? I need only the video, not the audio.

Tell your software to treat the PAL as "film"; in Avisynth, for example, the command is assumefps(24000,1001) - all frames are there, just at 23.976fps (or, more precisely, 24000/1001)
