Blade Runner International Cut Regrade (Criterion Collection Laserdisc)
#21
Stupid question. Does anyone know what studio logo should appeared at the beginning of Blade Runner? The BD has the Warner shield but I think for the time frame it would be the Saul Bass logo? Any ideas?

AFAIK, it just started with the Ladd Company logo originally, nothing else. I think the only mention of WB was the little notice at the bottom. I've seen other Ladd Company movies, they started out with just the Ladd logo as well.

The WB shield was only edited onto the beginning for the 1992 Director's Cut re-release.

Perfect that's exactly what I needed to know Servo, thanks. The WB shield looked wrong for the time and was clearly added.

This question is more rhetorical and me b**ching, but why do studios insist on changing these. I can understand adding extra before the "original" logos (that were there theatrically) or at the end of film, after the "original" logos, but this replacement of logos really bothers me. There are countless films where the intro music seamlessly transitions from logo to actual film and changing these logos interrupts everything before the film has even really started.

You are preaching to the choir. Couldn't agree more. Ironically, Warner Bros, who I find to be the biggest culprit of this practice, tend to treat their MGM titles more respectful then their own in this manner.

So I guess I'm officially finished with Blade Runner. I haven't come up with a way to torrent it yet but if anyone wants a copy just PM me. Its an approximately 21 GB download off of Mega.

The completed MKV is up at the spleen and blu-t. Alien is coming soon. I'd like to thank everyone who helped me:

Jonno: for capturing the Criterion Collection LD

Doombot: for advice, help and testing

Buster D: for the various LD soundtracks

StarThoughts: for the music score to fix the ending

Spaced Ranger: for color correction advice

captainsolo: for information about the film and a 35mm showing

MrNiceGuy: for distribution.

This is pretty neat, I saw it over on the LDDB, shows you the work that went into the CC laserdisc:

They put a lot more effort into making solid releases back then. Shame that this has not been continued now-a-days when we have HD and betterSad

I'd argue that Criterion, at least, have kept their end up all the way into the Blu-ray age - the only exceptions being where the directors have imposed revisions to the transfers (Scanners, Thief).

The booklets always include tech notes like those above so you know exactly how the material was sourced. They still take this stuff seriously. Arrow in the UK (who I understand have begun US releases) are excellent too.

The main problem is that the titles we're likely to be interested in around here are firmly within the clutches of studios' own distribution, and sublicenses like Criterion's are now pretty uncommon for films like Blade Runner. Hopefully that situation will shift again at some point, but since the studios have recognised the value of library titles that may take a while.
