CDS (Cinema Digital Sound) system overview
#11
That was my thought, but a lot of people mixed for 4.0 and it was a brand new format that needed learning

So just to be clear the CDS mix has never been released on home video and I'm better off looking for an OG stereo track?

I take it the LD is the best option in that case?

I believe the first 1999 DVD and later WS LDs of US had a direct port of CDS mix, while the SE DVD and BD/UHD releases have a new remix from the 6 channel D/M/E mag stems. Some DVDs, like the R1 SE and early CTHE R2/4 DVDs, have a 2.0 track which is probably the wide release Dolby Stereo LRCS.

Why would they bother doing a new 5.1 remix for the SE DVD when the CDS 5.1 was already available to them?

I mean, I don't like remixes in principle, but this one seems particularly unnecessary.

According to Rewind the first DVD was from Live (pre-Artisan) and non-anamorphic, the audio standard Dolby Digital 5.1.

I guess the best source would be the later WS laserdisc, then. Does anyone here have it?

Read the T2 diary from Van Ling, he explains why they did the remix.
Yes, there are many rips of the T2 LDs out there, an embarassment of riches.
The Live DVD is actually anamorphic. It has the 2.0 tracks for english and I think french and spanish.

Oh, we were talking about Universal Soldier.

(At least I was...)

So to confirm the UHD's 5.1 mix for Universal Soldier is the correct CDS mix?

I've been holding off buying it in case it isn't...

According to in70mm.com The Doors was a split-surround release on both 70mm 6-Track and CDS 35/70mm prints.

Edward Scissorhands was mixed for matrixed Dolby Stereo, according to film-tech the decision to release 70mm mag and CDS prints was very late in post-production, hence the 4.0 L-C-R-S configuration.

Mixing discrete split-surrounds (Format 43 in Dolby 6-track) was not an inherently new thing invented or made possible by the CDS format, there were (admittedly sporadic) Format 43 releases from Superman onwards.
