1992 LD [LV 1376-WS] PCM 2.0 decoded into 5.0 using a Shure HTS5300.  Synced to the UHD and saved as FLAC.  Really impressive mix.

I also have the 2003 DVD AC3 5.1 synced to the UHD, saved as FLAC, however, due to the surround channels needing to be lowered by 3db, and there being no way to do that without reencoding or saving as FLAC/PCM, so far I know.

And why would the surround channels need to be lowered by 3db? Isn't that supposed to be a dts HDMA thing only?

For whatever reason, the surround channel levels on that DVD 5.1 were mastered 3db too loud.  How or why that happened is unknown.  There are various posts about it out there in the ether.

I had forgotten about those hot surrounds in the dvd mix. Do we know wether Temple and Crusade were affected in the same way?

How bad would the rear channels be if we left them at whatever volume they are?

To give some context a 3db increase is obtained by doubling the power, and corresponds to about 25% increased perceived loudness.

So when surrounds are 3dbs too loud it definitely throws the mix off balance, especially with dolby stereo for which surrounds are only supposed to reproduce diffuse ambiance sounds and occasional front rear pannings.

How bad it will sound will depend on personnal sensibilities, as many persons are already used to listening to too loud surrounds in the first place (audyssey dynamic EQ and dynamic volume increase the volume of surround channels substantially)

I always feel like my rear speakers are too low, no matter how much calibration I do. I'm wondering if it's better to leave the levels where they are rather than convert the audio to WAV and then FLAC in an attempt to fix them.
