The LFE on the French HD-DVD (and French early Blu-ray as it's its clone) DTS-HDMA track is known to be tampered with, which is why the Japanese DVD DTS track is favored because of no, or less, filtering.

Filtering is not the problem. The content itself is completely different. The LFE usually contains dedicated, isolated effects and not the routed bass of the other channels.

I think that the original LFE was indeed that, routed bass of the other channels. Remember they closed this movie on the wire.

We sadly don't know that. The Laserdisc (with CDS mix) was released 1998 and contains a completely different LFE. So, maybe they created the "real" LFE after 1991 (and before 2001). If that was the case, then there exists a third mix (CDS + dedicated LFE).

Are there any captures from original 35 mm for validation of that theory?

Considering the technological capabilities available when the film was released, this mix wasn't really intended to be anything particularly special anyway

And only 112 35mm Dolby SR prints vs. 2574 Dolby A. I was under the impression SR was backwards compatible with older processors - maybe those prints were more expensive or time consuming to produce?

General consensus, yes, I guess, or sort of. But some people claim the 1997 DVD to be more genuine. And others think the French Blu-ray sounds better than the Japanese DTS because the filtering is welcome for a cleaner presentation. On the other hand, some will tell you the Japanese DTS has better fidelity because it's not tampered with said filtering, or to a lesser extent. So, basically, all 3 are to be preserved for posterity.

I found the answer. The LFE is not only defect, it is mixed into the surrounds! It seems that this was fixed with the Laserdisc and the remix later.

And there are more things wrong: the parts that belong to the surround effects have a large dip from 70-300 HZ, so they sound very thin. However, the parts that belong to the LFE have the expected low frequency spectrum. So there went something really wrong when they created this mix.

On the Laserdisc the LFE and surrounds have the expected spectrums.

From my point of view the mixes that are favoured in this thread are completely useless.

Useless? Dude, it's not all about LFE. I couldn’t care less about LFE, I have neighbors! The CDS mix has differences in content and its spacialization is much better than the remix. It's an Oscar winner historical mix, a pioneer digital mix that predates Dolby Digital and DTS. Having the LFE in the surrounds is how theatrical DTS works as well, by the way. There was less emphasis on LFE at the time. I'd rather watch T2 with any of the CDS renditions than with the bass heavier remix any day of the week! And there's also the option of our ex-member Chewie who swapped LFEs and used the remix LFE from the Skynet Edition to put on the Japanese DTS rendition of the CDS mix to "pimp it up".
