I definitely need a faster PC since a long time...
Now I can afford it, but I have still some doubts... x264 works well with multicore, but what's about VirtualDub? And AviSynth uses setMT or other multicore filters, but it seems that increase in speed is not related to the core numbers... I mean, I'm sure I will get no 6x speed if I use a 6-core instead of a 1-core CPU (with the same clock cache etc.), right?
Also, I'd like to know the experience of you, forum members, about the use of the three softwares - x264, AviSynth, VirtualDub - on multicore fast CPUs, like i7 or Xeon 4 or 6 cores, with Windows 7, 8, 10, all 64bit.
Thanks, and sorry for the too many questions - it will be not bad to spare 400€ if I can achieve similar encoding speed upgrading only a simple used old CPU!

Sadly, the website is offline...
Still, my questions remain unanswered! May you tell me, for example, what CPU you have, and, an x264 encoding (veryslow) speed of a lossless file? Here, with my old C2D E6300 it runs at a "whopping" 1.18fps!

Not sure if it will help you much, but Core i5 750 @ 3.3GHz can do 45fps with a lagarith, interlaced and PAL resolution file.

Forgot to mention I was encoding a ; speed should be aroud 1/5th for that = 9fps, still great in comparison with mine!

What do you mean? The video is not 45 fps, it was encoding with 45 fps

Of course! but a 1080/25p should takes about 6 times a 576/50i, hence 45/6 = about 8fps (not 9, wrong typing!)

Unfortunately I haven't worked with those programs so I can't help you there. With Adobe Premiere though my i7 does miracles.
You also might want at least 16GB of RAM, don't settle for 8 or you'll regret it in a few years.

I just found a sample of lossless 1920x1080 video on my PC. First pass goes at 17 fps, second 9, both veryslow preset.

Good news! Thanks very much for the info - it seems that, at the end, the workstation *should* be able to reach this speed, if not better!
