Advice needed for a new PC
#21
It definitely should. My CPU is 7 years old and I overclocked it only a little bit Smile

My decade old CPU is a bit tired... but it still works (slowly) well even today... but two days to encode a 135min 1080/24p lossless video to x264 it's still "a bit too" much! Big Grin

TIME TO BUY A NEW PC! At least, if the software I use don't work, I'll downgrade to Window XP 64bit! Big Grin

If you can, just avoid Windows 10 (which is a rebadged Win 7 riddled with bugs) and you'll be fine. Windows 8 is still the best Windows since XP.

Again here... lost the occasion to buy that workstation, and no satisfying used computers around - what can I say, I prefer to test an used hardware before buying it... am I the only one?

Now, a new interesting second-hand one pop out; frankly, it's quite over my budget, but it seems that price/quality ratio is good, so... here you are the specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7 4770 3.4Ghz Socket 1150
Liquid Cooler: Enermax Liqmax II 240
Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth Z87
RAM: DDR3 G.Skill Ripjawsz 2133Mhz 16GB
Video card: EVGA GTX 760 ACX 2GB
Hard Disk: Western Digital Velociraptor 600GB 10.000rpm
Power Supply: Inter-Tech Combat 750W
Case: Phantenks Enthoo Pro

Final price: 550€ :eek but I should act fast...

Again, it should be fast (A LOT FASTER than my poor old Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86GHz) with Avisynth+Virtualdub and x264; it will be devoted to just that... still don't know how I will pay it, though! Big Grin

The Ryzen announcements have just been made, and the price is astoundingly good for the performance, it might push 2nd hand prices down as people upgrade. I'd wait another month if you can.

Now it's my turn. Or need I make a separate thread for my ideal laptop? In any case, I plan to start looking for new laptops tomorrow (4/8), and I was hoping someone could guide me on what to look for. Right now, I've got these specs in mind:

- At least 500 GB storage, 1 TB storage ideal
- No slower than Core i5, Core i7 ideal (thanks, Andrea!)
- No less than 8 GB RAM, 16 GB RAM ideal (thanks, Chewtobacca!)
- NVIDIA discrete graphics card

Did I miss anything?
