I'm still interested in colorizing the B&W bluray of "Miracle on 34th Street" with the FS DVD. Not trying to hijack your thread but I read somewhere (in another thread, but not sure which one because I'm catching up on a few months worth of posts) something about an "auto-aligning" script... Would it be possible to use this to align the video frames (once the DVD is upscaled properly) between the B&W version and the colorized version, in order to superimpose the color onto the B&W footage??
EDIT: I guess this does fall partially into this thread, as it is about colorizing a B&W source, although with a source already in existence rather than "from scratch"... lol

jerryshadoe, that might work, but it may only work to a limited degree or require lots of hand-correction, as the best results are achieved when the sources are very similar. Best would probably be to use a desaturated BW-version of the color DVD for the aligning. If the sources aren't from the same master and thus not stabilized to each other, this will severely slow down the process (had it with a project of mine). Even so, you won't be able to colorize any part of the image with this method that isn't visible in the DVD (naturally). Dunno whether that is an issue with that film.

Most of the frames align up pretty well, as far as what's present in both shots, but there is a slight warping of the picture in the colorized DVD version which is why I haven't attempted it before, because it's not consistent throughout the film. It's nothing horrible, but it was noticeable in some scenes when I threw both video streams onto a timeline in VegasPro. Still, if I could get the two aligned relatively closely via automation (even if I have to make manual corrections) it would save a LOT of time. I would really love to see the film with the 35mm grain present on the bluray remaster, but in the colorized version.
I know, I know, those colorized versions from the 80s "sucked," but I actually first saw this film on TBS around late-1989/early1990 in this colorized version and didn't see the original B&W until 1993, when I was living in Poland (in Europe) and was "shocked" by how "backwards" Polish TV was by showing an aged B&W copy of the film. Like they couldn't even afford the color version... Keep in mind, I was eleven years old in 1993 and didn't know any better. Years later, I learned that the B&W was actually the original and what I grew up on was a "bastardized colored version." Still, I ended up buying the color DVD release and always enjoyed xmas time re-airings on TBS/TNT in the late 90s and early 2000s. With a little bit of color tweaking the colorized version doesn't look that bad and I'd love to see it in true 1080p HD.... even if I have to figure it out myself.... although ANY technical pointers would be awesome

Well, AutoAlign doesn't account for warping, it only positions, rotates, scales. But someone else posted another script using some software called Something Something Registration. Forgot the name. That one does account for warping I think.

Something, something registration is THE BEST SOFTWARE APP name I've ever heard. Honestly, thank you for the humongous laugh that resulted in snot being all over my face...
If you ever figure out what it's actually called, or if someone else can chime in on this, it'd be greatly appreciated. I'm looking to find a way to fix warping easily by aligning two different sources for a few projects of mine, so any suggestions are welcome, even if it's not an AIO solution. Thanx in advance to whomever might answer
