What do you get the man/woman who has everything? Why a laserdisc recorder of course:

Has anyone here ever heard of such a thing? I think it's for broadcast use.

AFAIK the problem with the Sony LD recorders is that they used special LD in cartridge typed recordable discs.
Some years ago there was a LD recorder for standard recordable LDs at eBay, together with 5 recordable discs... But it was too expensive to obtain.

Sadly, the CRV discs are not laserdiscs, hence not compatible nor playable with a standard laserdisc player...

Yes indeed the blank disc cartridges seem to be the stumbling block. I'm guessing this recorder was for broadcast, in the way that 8-tracks were used for radio 'jingles'.

This is a component format, while laserdisc is composite, completely uncompatible.
Still, a great piece of hardware to own!

This is turning out to be a popular auction. Anyone here bidding on it?

I was wondering if perhaps this could be reverse engineered and then with the knowledge an engineer could make a modern LD recorder that simply makes a file instead of a disc. Basically I would like ton know exactly how this laserdisc recorder could be improved to translate and copy an LD to a file

This is actually done - take a look at Domesday86 project: https://www.domesday86.com/

This is actually done - take a look at Domesday86 project: https://www.domesday86.com/ no thats merely an rf capture device to capture the rf signal from the laser. im talking about actually reverse engineering the recorder. please lmk if im wrong in some way. im open minded

Well, LDdecode software (along with proper hardware) literally copy everything is recorded onto a laserdisc into a file - hence video, audio (analog and digital), closed captions or teletext subtitles, LD-ROM codes.
