Looking for the "right" Alien Resurrection color grading...

Did you know I have also the THX AC3 laserdisc? No? Well, me too... really forgot I have it!

Captured a short snippet with the same settings, here are the response: they have the same vertical size, while horizontally DTS has more image on the left, while THX on the right - two pixels each, when captured; THX contrast is about 4% smaller than DTS, saturation is around 13% lower; when properly adjusted, they are virtually the same.

So, from now on, even if I'll refer to DTS lasedisc, the same should be valid for the THX AC3 version (when properly adjusted).

Last word: on the LD cover, there is a mention of the ENR process.

I was going to respond to the other posting but I guess I'll do this one.

I got to be honest, I'm not sure what you are working toward spoRv but that kinda proves what I'm saying. Both LDs, the DVD and the BD are basically the same looking transfer. The color differences you are seeing are just saturation differences. If you pump the sat up of the DVD or BD you get the same look (more yellow/golden). Same with the THX LD, if you pump the look up it looks like your DTS cap which probably looks that way because you pumped up the saturation in the capture. I do recall a wise man once told me not to trust saturation on laserdiscs. Wonder who that was?

And the contrast difference are truly non existent when I look at the THX LD, DVD, HDTV and BD on the scopes/IRE.

It seems you are taking this personally Andrea given your affair comment and want to make this a project. Sorry I was just looking for the best version of AR and I think the differences are either in the capture, video levels or or 601 vs 709. So I'll leave you to it, good luck on your project.

PDB, I wrote a kilometric answer, but I lost it somehow, as usual...

Long story short: I think I am right, you think you are right. As in this case it's impossible to be both right (or wrong), one is right, and the other is not. Who is right, and who is wrong?
("I could be wrong... I could be right!", do you remember that song?!?)

To solve the question, I think you should prove me wrong providing a SINGLE setting for saturation, contrast, brightness, gamma etc. that will turn the BD to look, if not identical, really close to the LD in every single shot; you are allowed also to add a SINGLE color correction just to remove the pink tint.

This is a friendly challenge, of course, if you have time and will to do it.

I will be more than happy to change my mind in the case! Until then, I am right, the Earth is flat and the Sun is rotating around it...

I can't claim to know how Alien: Resurrection is supposed to look, but for what it's worth, I think the LD looks very similar to other Jean-Pierre Jeunet films in terms of color timing.

The DE and US non-SE have a color grading really close to the NTSC DTS LD (and THX AC3 LD as well); probably the slight differnce in saturation is due to my capture settings, or in the inherent nature of the laserdisc analog format (or both?); the DE SE and CA CE have simlar grading, but CA CE is a tag greener, and I prefer DE SE - it has the same colors of BD/HDTV; these seems to confirm there are only two main masters, the old one (LD and first non-SE DVD), and the new one (SE DVD, BD, HDTV).

PDB, I'm interested in your silver print look. So If I get this right, I take a picture in photoshop, then duplicate a layer than I turn black & white, then I reduce opacity by 50% (with the color version below) and it does the silver print look? Thanks

Italian TV channel RAI4 showed Alien 4 with Italian credits, those scenes are for sure from a theatrical release because the localized version was never released on home video. It's likely that most of the movie is from Blu Ray but the intro up until young Ripley clone naked in the tank should be from direct 35mm transfer.
