Brand new used PC finally found its way home - mine!

Unfortunately a lot of avisynth is only single threaded.

Agree, but, even if all of them were multithreaded, no need for a RAID0 or SSD - at least, not with this CPU... on the other side, getting a new 64core AMD CPU, maybe... Big Grin

It sounds like you should be plenty fast enough for a while!

Yep, absolutely! Ok Making things 10 times faster, would allow me to make 10 more things in the same amount of time...

Errata: in the post #50 (https://fanrestore.com/thread-1312-post-...l#pid26258) I wrote megaBYTEs/s and not megaBITs/s... my fault...

So, the conclusion is: using avisynth, even with the simplest operations and SD material, an SSD (or even a simple RAID0 configuration) is useless... well, this discover avoided me to spend $$$ on an SSD... big HDD, wait for me! Big Grin

Today I was around for shopping, and I ended in a PC shop. I asked for HDDs prices - out of the world, of course, and my eyes dropped on an old Sony monitor... I always loved it, it's stilish, and has a glossy display - I know, it could be not that great with direct lights behind it, but I use almost always on the evening, with no lights on...

As the old Samsung monitor that must be used with the new PC is dead, and this cost as mush as few Big Macs - with no cholesterol added - I thought to grab it; what the hell, I could always sell tomorrow for the same price! Barely used, in very good condition; the room where it, along with the new PC, would reside, will be ready in the next few days.

Here you are the pictures of the Sony SDM-HS73W: http://img.tomshardware.com/us/2004/03/2...n/sony.jpg - and a review with pictures of the back: http://www.digitaltrends.com/monitor-rev...s73-review

A nice little piece of hardware history - that I was not able to afford at the time, but now at 1/15th of the original MSRP, I can't refuse to grab it - at least, it's a great looking "piece of furniture"! Big Grin

Very, very happy with the new PC, but... yes, there is a "but"... I think I contracted a new fever, the "most powerful computer" one, I think is named! Big Grin

I had one similar many years ago, about electronic music gears - synths, samplers et al. So, now that I can recognize the symptomps, I can say this is just a mild fever, and probably would pass in few days. But it pushed me to explore the possible scenarios of an eventual upgrading.

The most easy, and cheap, would be to upgrade the CPU; the best I can install in my mobo, the Intel i7 4790K, will cost about 250/300€, and would gave me just a mere 11% speed increase. At default speed. But I read a lot about overclocking, and, with my actual rig, I can push it from 4GHz up to 4.6GHz for a 24/7 use. I would stay lower, at 4.4GHz, so the increase would stand around 22%. Not bad, not bad at all. Then, I could sell my 4770 (non-K) and recover good part of the price of the new CPU.

Another option is to buy another used PC, and sell my actual one; this is a risky option, though, because this one was really well cared, carefully built and maintened, with good hardware. What about the new one? If it has a non-locked CPU, the risk of long time overclock (maybe pushed to the limit) is quite high. You know, those teenagers who should play the hardest games at the maximus allowable speed... oh, how much I miss my MSX days! Big Grin Plus, what if I can't find a buyer quickly?

Spend half of my actual PC cost to get an used CPU, and a 22% speed increase, and probably recover almost all selling my actual CPU, or risk and find out another good used PC, with higher specs, hoping to sell mine and recover, again, almost all? Even if I would be lucky, selling CPU or PC, in the former case I will spend just 50/100€ at the end, while I fear in the latter case the figures would be higher...

Oh well, today I found the desktop of my dreams for less than 2000€ - now I need someone who would pay for it! Wink

Thanks in part also to poita, who let me discover the Cinegy Cinescore benchmark, I understood that my CPU, albeit not the fastest, and not overclockable, is often faster than the newer 6700K... so, I think I would put it on sale (but it will stay inside the PC, continuing to work) and, when I eventually will sell it, I'll replace it with the 4790K - maybe I would be able to do the upgrade with about 100€.

Hard disk: finally I ordered a 4TB one, will be here on friday; then, the old ones (4TB and 2TB) will be all take out the previous PC and put in the new one; still don't know if waste time and space to get two small 250GB and put them in as well... maybe in RAID0, to be faster, or RAID1, to be safer... SSD would be the next toy, a small one, just to see how good could be; a 120GB should do. Thinking to sell the VelociRaptor - 10000rpm is not necessarily so much faster than 5900rpm, when huge files are transferred.

There is only a small problem: as the old PC has Windows XP, I used Disc Wizard to split the big 4TB in two logical volumes; should I use it as well in the new PC - at least, until I have made a complete backup - or Windows 10 will be able to read it as is?

Internet connection: this evening I have gone to a friend's house, to let him help me with the seeding of my projects; well, I hate him! Big Grin He has a fiber connection, and started to seed at almost 4MBps... I mean, 4000KBps! Mine is at most around 60kbps, so he goes 40x faster, minimum... indeed, a 25GB BD was transferred in few hours, when it took me a week in the past. Time to upgrade it as well - probably I have found an offer at the same price of this sh***y connection of mine...

Well, the new PC works flawlessly; indeed, I was able to release not one, but TWO projects in a matter of days... I plan to release the next two or three in a week or two, so be prepared! Big Grin

The PC runs smooth and fast; the fact is, I ask too much from it!

So, thinking to an *eventual* second (third, in reality), desktop PC, I found a brand new Ryzen ThreadRipper 1920x at only 200€ (on Amazon, is a bit less than 600€); sure, I must buy a motherboard, RAMs, GPU etc. but the price is too good to let it go... or not? Big Grin

Now that I look at the pictures I posted, it seems they are taken from a sort of "red light showcase" found on some movies, with all these interesting... "things" inside Big Grin

So you're now living in the "Red Light District"? LOL
