Runaway Train (1985) - two different intro titles?
#1
I just came across this

Quote:Left video and audio: 1998 DVD.
Right video and audio: 2014 DVD (double feature w/The Taking of Pelham One Two Three)

I never knew there were two types of intro titles to this film and I wonder which one is from the theatrical version? The one on the left? Both?
I checked my Italian blu ray and it reflects the version to the right but I do have the VHS tape somewhere, the VHS features credits in Italian language but it's a 35mm transfer so that would be a sure way to tell. Does anyone have any more info on this?

My American NTSC cassette issued by MGM/UA Home Video also uses the sequence on the right.

My Cannon VHS (struck from Italian 35mm) also features the same animation on the right. This adds a bit of mystery on the version seen on the left of that video. According to the description it comes from an early DVD release and I expected that to be the theatrical version.

Don't know the answer but wasn't the DVD/BD the extended cut aka the original cut? I thought the theatrical (and VHS) was cut down but the disc version were the longer, original cut.

Am I remembering that right?

On imdb I read:

Quote:The DVD mysteriously edits out the shot of the first helicopter policeman being run over by the wheels of the train. You see him crash into the train windshield and see him fall off, but then you see just a plain shot of the wheels. In all other versions of the film on video and laserdisc have a shot of this man's face coming right at the camera as his body is run over by the wheels of the train. Even the US TV version has a brief shot of this. This shot is present in the UK Arrow Films DVD release.

While the US and DVD version is missing the shot of the cop being pulled under the wheels of the train, it is included on the uncut Australian region 4 DVD from MGM and the UK DVD from Arrow Films

That's what I learned, too, but I didn't think it was important enough information at the time, apart from the whole "missing shot on some releases" thing.

Pretty sure I saw the titles on the left during a BBC 1 showing maybe 15/16 years ago, but I can't say for certain.
