Gold Standard Collection
#1
Ah, what the heck, I may as well spill my current plans for the tentatively-titled Gold Standard Collection before I forget them.

Basically, the Gold Standard Collection is a series of restorations which more or less have the same goal as those made by Andrea, Jerry Shadoe, and the Aluminum Falcon. Plus, there's going to be some cool features such as titles in different languages (as applicable) and even commentary tracks, among other perks. Tools such as DaVinci Resolve, PowerDirector, Yadif, NNEDI3, Lanczos, FFMPEG, VirtualDub, Audacity, and the best Blu-ray/DVD authroing software I can get for free, among other software, will be used for each title in the collection as applicable.

As with spoRv's Fundamental Collection titles, I intend to include English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish tracks as applicable, in addition to the original language track. Alternate cuts will also be included as necessary.

Here are the current planned releases in alphabetical order, with the planned aspect ratios and audio options for each release:
  • After Death (original and R-rated) (1.66:1 aspect ratio) (audio in English, French, German, and Italian)

* Unknown whether I'll actually do each version or release so marked due to circumstances

It should be noted that "Odyssey" refers to an oddity in the Magnetic Video library which is completely Scanimated. Also, I have no plans to do the theatrical cut of The Muppet Christmas Carol. I will update this list as I continue to figure things out. At present, I'm not entirely sure which to release or produce first.

Happy to see another collection here, and hope to see some releases ASAP! Ok

It has come to my attention that the major studios have been scamming us lately in regards to the Spanish and French audio tracks. Specifically, even on European releases they're using the Mexican and Canadian tracks instead of the Castilian and Parisian tracks. Needless to say, whenever possible, I plan to use both tracks for both languages, and label them clearly. For now, the opening post will mention both languages broadly, as I don't yet know whether the Mexican or Castilian or both, or the Canadian or Parisian or both, will be available to me for each project.

I would love to see a HD 1.33:1 version for Dawn of the Dead. Smile
And, what's with Day of the Dead? Big Grin

But: impressive List, seems as if you have plenty to archive ahead... Hope you get all the needed stuff.

If and when I do Revenge of the Sith (and it will definitely not be for at least a few years, the way things are going; there is indeed a 3D version extant, but apart from selected screenings it has not been made available to the public), I was hoping to also include the hilarious "Backstroke of the West" track. Also, I'd appreciate some help particularly in the acquisition of German and Italian tracks for certain titles, particularly those not explicitly mentioning German or Italian audio tracks as planned options (there's always room for surprises, after all). Tracks I'm sure I can take care of myself among those listed, I'll indicate in a future post.

I could try to help with the Italian tracks...

Thanks. The following Italian tracks, I'm sure I can take care of myself:
  • After Death (Oltre la morte)
  • Akira
  • The Beyond (or, Seven Doors of Death)
  • The Black Hole
  • City of the Living Dead
  • Contraband
  • The Colossus of Rhodes
  • Dangaioh
  • Danger: Diabolik
  • Der Untergang
  • The Empire Strikes Back
  • The Fighting Fist of Shangai Joe
  • Fistful of Dollars
  • For a Few Dollars More
  • The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
  • The House by the Cemetery
  • The Last Days of Pompeii
  • My Name Is Nobody
  • Puma Man
  • The Return of the Jedi
  • Sailor Moon R: The Promise of the Rose
  • Star Wars
  • The Terminator
  • Terminator 2: Judgment Day 3D
  • Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer
  • Urusei Yatsura: Only You
  • Urusei Yatsura: Remember My Love
  • Zombi
  • Zombi 2
  • Zombi 3

Apart from the above, I could use your assistance in getting Italian tracks where you can provide it. For the Lupin the Third stuff (including the movies), I'd like the specific dubs labeled properly, so that I can tell which dub is which (the Lupin-related projects I'm currently planning have multiple Italian dubs as far as I'm aware). I'll let you know if any of the above I find harder to obtain than I'd thought as of writing.

For "The Beast Must Die", I already have the English track on my VHS cassette from Allied Artists Video (which I think is the only place to find the English track), and I'm pretty sure I can find the French track if I know where to look. The other three (German, Italian, and Spanish), I'm pretty much unsure where to find them, let alone if they even exist. Needless to say, that's one title where the NNEDI3-Lanczos pair may come in handy.

"Lupin the Third: The Secret of Mamo" -- When I say "PG-rated", I mean to say it'll be a pre-edited version running around 90 minutes in length, removing a lot of the more suggestive scenes. The Frontier English dub and the Japanese audio versions are the only ones I know of that won't need too much in the way of editing for that version. As far as I know, there were four Italian dubs. The first one, produced in 1979 under the title "Lupin III", is available on DVD and Blu-ray from Yamato Video. A censored version was used as the source for the second dub, produced for television in 1986 and available on the 2005 DVD from De Agostini and Yamato. The third dub, produced in 1993 for VHS, is available on VHS and DVD from, you guessed it, Yamato. The fourth and final dub, based on Geneon's English dub from 2003, was produced for television and has not yet been made available on home video on any format as far as I'm aware. With the sole exception of the first dub, all Italian releases used the title "La pietra della saggezza". You think you can acquire any of them, if you haven't already? (By contrast, "Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro" has three Italian dubs, all available on DVD in some form.) And were the Miyazaki-directed episodes of "Le nuove avventure di Lupin III" (the Red Jacket series) ever made available on DVD dubbed into Italian?

For "Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back", I'm pretty sure the Italian dub is available on the Italian DVD release, but was "The Origin of Mewtwo", included on the DVD of "Mewtwo Returns", ever dubbed in Italian?

And in regards to "Reservoir Dogs", would the 15th Anniversary Blu-ray be a good source for the luma, or is it NNEDI3 + Lanczos to the rescue once more?
